Digital building applications in Brandenburg: The path to paperless construction!

More and more building authorities in Brandenburg are turning to digital methods to advance housing construction. Building applications can already be submitted online in the districts of Oberspreewald-Lausitz, Märkisch-Oderland, Prignitz, Teltow-Fläming, Uckermark and the city of Schwedt. Six building supervisory authorities have now set up a virtual building office that is intended to promote networking between builders, planners, authorities and communities. The goal: Shorten processing times and reduce bureaucratic effort. How star reported, those responsible assume that from 2026 all 20 lower building supervisory authorities in the region will work with the digital platform.

The Brandenburg Infrastructure Minister Detlef Tabbert highlights the advantages of this innovation. Digital processing not only makes procedures more efficient, but also reduces the need to print paper and signatures. Stacks of sheets when submitting applications will then be a thing of the past.

Digital submission made easy

The digital procedures enable citizens to submit their documents quickly and easily online. However, the technical framework conditions are clearly defined: When submitting a building application, a maximum of 100 files may be uploaded. Each individual file cannot be larger than 80 MB and the total amount of data should not exceed 200 MB. Only PDF files are accepted - other formats will result in incomplete application submission. The building supervisory authorities have also agreed on sensible file names and a ban on umlauts. As per the official website of the Virtual Building Authority Brandenburg password protection and special characters in the file names must also be avoided.

Pilot project in Calau

The digital building authority was only recently officially presented in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district. Minister Rainer Genilke (CDU) started the pilot project in Calau on Wednesday, which, in addition to quick processing, also offers a central platform for data exchange. Building applications should be processed completely digitally until they are approved. The Oberspreewald-Lausitz district acts as a coordination point and will work closely with the other building supervisory authorities involved in the implementation. An average of 600 building applications are processed every year in Oberspreewald-Lausitz - so there is potential here that could be significantly increased through digitalization.

The expected savings of around 250,000 sheets of paper per year shows that switching to digital processes not only makes sense economically, but also ecologically. These advances are particularly remarkable considering that neighboring federal states such as Baden-Württemberg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have already introduced similar digital systems.

Overall, it shows that Brandenburg is on the right track to advance housing construction through modern technology and at the same time increase efficiency. Digitalization not only brings short distances for applicants, but also clear advantages for the authorities, who can deal with less bureaucracy and more clarity.
