On Thursday afternoon, just in time for the end of the working day, there was a special kind of fire brigade operation in Templin city center. The alarm sounded due to burnt food in a senior center on Berliner Straße. The automatic fire alarm system had correctly triggered and thus alerted the Templin volunteer fire department. Operations manager René Müller reported that the affected apartment was heavily smoky, but the all-clear was quickly given: All that was necessary was ventilation so that the apartment remained habitable. Fortunately, there were no injuries, which was a relief for everyone involved.
In addition to the Templin volunteer fire department, which was quickly on site, emergency services from the Gandenitz district also provided support. However, they were able to withdraw soon after the situation was under control. A 71-year-old from Eberswalde, who was returning from a viewing appointment, was positive about the speed and efficiency of the operation.
Fire protection in senior citizens' facilities
Such operations shed light on the high demands placed on fire protection in nursing and senior citizens' facilities. Many residents rely on help to get to safety in an emergency. After a fire, there are usually no more than ten minutes left to evacuate, and in the immediate vicinity of the source of the fire it is often only two to three minutes, the critical time to save lives.
In the last five years there have been over 700 fires in social facilities, sadly including 79 deaths and more than 1,160 injuries. In 2023 alone, 180 fires were counted, resulting in 27 deaths and over 270 injuries. The operators of the facilities are responsible for fire protection and must meet the minimum legal requirements set out in the respective state building regulations.
Technical solutions and their importance
An important aspect of fire protection is technical fire protection, which includes individual concepts consisting of structural, organizational and technical measures. Automatic fire alarm systems (BMA) play a crucial role in this, as they ensure early fire detection and can therefore save lives. Sprinkler systems are also used to quickly contain fires and thus increase the chances of survival.
Smoke and heat extraction systems (RWA) help to expel dangerous smoke gases to the outside and support both self-rescue and external rescue. Organizational measures such as regular training, evacuation plans and risk assessments are also essential for successful firefighting until the fire brigade arrives.
The current incident in Templin shows once again how important a well-thought-out fire protection concept is, especially in times of a shortage of skilled workers. The need for such measures is underscored by the statistically increasing number of fires in care and senior citizens' facilities, which point to an urgent need for action and investment. The integration of modern technical solutions can sustainably improve the safety and well-being of residents.
