Mood of crisis in Rostock's shopping centers: owners under criticism!

Unrest is simmering in Rostock: the conditions in the shopping and supply centers, especially in Klenow Tor and Südstadt-Center, are anything but inviting. At the last town hall meeting there was once again no prospect of relaxation. The topic of unresolved problems is raised again and again, with no solution in sight. The owner, Ionnis Moraitis, did not pay his bills to the municipal utilities, which led to the district heating being repeatedly switched off. This not only affects the quality of living, but also the urgently needed medical care in the local facilities, which is particularly precarious for patients, including cancer patients, because they have to freeze in their practices. The situation is so serious that the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Medical Association is calling for the conditions to be improved in order to ensure adequate patient care.

The problems are diverse: vandalism, broken elevators and a lack of fire protection pose a great danger. The situation in the underground car park, where the police are investigating suspected arson, is particularly alarming. Christian Albrecht, chairman of the left-wing faction in the Rostock citizenship, leaves no doubt that responsibility for the grievances lies with the Berlin owner, who no longer guarantees the necessary care and maintenance of the property.

Political reactions and demands

It is not for nothing that the Left has submitted a proposal to establish a municipally supported acquisition initiative in order to be prepared for a possible compulsory auction of the Klenow Tor and the Südstadt Center. However, this proposal did not find a majority among the citizens. Julia Kristin Pittasch from the FDP categorically rejects expropriations, while Sybille Bachmann from the Rostocker Bund emphasizes that there is currently no compulsory auction and that the city cannot act as a broker. The Greens support the Left, but point out that the situation cannot change overnight. Uwe Michaelis from the SPD believes that the chances of improvement through an employment initiative are overestimated.

To make matters worse, applications to provide replacement premises for medical facilities were also rejected. A move of doctors from these centers is already underway and Michaelis strongly warns that they may not return. The pressure is growing on the city administration, which is currently busy closing the local office in Klenow Tor and reviewing fire protection measures. Initial approaches to improving waste disposal and drinking water quality have been found, but sustainable solutions are still missing.

Fire safety and future steps

Preventative fire protection is a central point that must not be neglected throughout the entire process. The appropriate measures are essential to prevent fires from breaking out and to secure escape routes. Both structural and technical aspects play a fundamental role, such as: Fire protection department of the Rostock district emphasized. Your job is to work with owners to find solutions to prevent hazards and comply with legal requirements.

The citizens of Rostock have to prepare for a long journey in order to deal with the problems sustainably. Discussions between district management, tenants and managers are ongoing, but the population is wondering when real solutions will finally come to the table. Until then, we can only hope that those responsible will realize that getting involved is part of it - because there really is something to be done.
