Brandenburg's cycling: A wake-up call for more safety and friendliness!
Brandenburg achieved mixed results in the renowned ADFC bicycle climate test, disappointing the high expectations of many cyclists. The test, which took place from September to November 2024 and the results of which will be published in spring 2025, clearly shows that there is still a lot of catching up to do in Brandenburg in order to achieve the goal of the Mobility Act: by 2030, at least 20% of journeys should be made by bicycle. Unfortunately, Brandenburg doesn't do particularly well compared to other regions. However, positive approaches can be seen in cities such as Potsdam, Perleberg and Cottbus, which have received positive feedback, as reported by Nachrichten Aktuell.
The state chairman of the Brandenburg Greens, Clemens Rostock, is critical of the results of the test. He emphasizes that without sufficient staff, appropriate planning capacities and, above all, long-term financing, no real change in bicycle-friendliness can occur. “The current draft budget envisages cuts in cycling,” says Rostock, pointing out the need to increase funding for cycling from the previous 4 to over 40 million euros annually. However, these resources are not sufficient without proper planning and implementation.
Recognize deficits in cycling
The ADFC bicycle climate test, one of the largest cycling climate surveys in the world, assesses the satisfaction of cyclists in Germany and clearly shows existing deficits. Brandenburg lacks safe and comfortable bicycle paths, good parking facilities and a priority for traffic safety. The participating cyclists were able to give their personal assessment of bike-friendliness and provide valuable tips on how to improve the infrastructure. The results not only help to evaluate the success of promoting cycling, but also offer traffic planners and political leaders important clues for future measures. Those interested can find further information and the opportunity to take part in the test on the [ADFC] website (https://fahrradklima-test.adfc.de/).
The challenges are clear: Brandenburg has ideal conditions for cycling, but concrete measures are needed to take advantage of these opportunities. Rostock therefore calls for increased efforts to improve the conditions for cyclists. This is the only way to close the existing gap between the possibilities and actual cycling friendliness and to make Brandenburg a pioneer for cycling.
