Neuruppin celebrates the prize for urban greenery: Your park, your future!
Movement is the order of the day in Neuruppin! With the project “YOUR PARK. YOUR CITY.” The city has really worked hard in recent years to revitalize public green spaces and offer its citizens a quality of life. The Braschplatz recently became a lively meeting place for sports enthusiasts with a temporary beach volleyball court, which was implemented at the suggestion of the younger generation. The open stage program on the school square impressed with music, dance and creative participation activities and thus attracted numerous visitors. Neuruppin.de reports that The fruits of cooperation between administration, schools, citizens and associations become visible throughout the city.
The focus is on methods of citizen participation. In the summer of 2025, as part of the federal model project “YOUR PARK. YOUR CITY.” the future of the pitches in Neuruppin was tested. At a celebration in the inner courtyard of the Old Gymnasium, Mayor Nico Ruhle praised the citizens' great commitment. “It is important to us to further develop the city together with you,” said Ruhle, who also introduced the new project module “YOUR CITY” to actively shape public space.
A role model for urban development
The project is not only notable at the local level, but has also received national recognition. In September 2024, “DEIN PARK” was awarded the renowned Federal Urban Green Prize. This shared national-urban-development-policy.de with. The award ceremony took place as part of the Federal Congress for National Urban Development Policy, where a total of four prizes were awarded. “DEIN PARK” made it into the spotlight as one of the most innovative projects and was recognized for its holistic approach to improving urban greenery.
With a prize of 15,000 euros, the jury honored the transformation of a previously little-used city park on Lake Ruppiner into an attractive recreational area that combines monument protection, ecology and the promotion of exercise. It is a prime example of how urbanity and nature can be combined. bmwsb.bund.de explains that the preservation and development of urban greenery is a joint task in which all actors must work together to meet challenges such as climate change and densification.
Strong together for the city
In the city park there is not only new sports equipment and furniture, attractively designed leisure areas have been created that enrich the experience for young and old. Volunteers built the raised beds on the church square, and the park school, which enables outdoor lessons, was also very well received. The execution of the maintenance work, for example by school classes, shows how much the citizens of Neuruppin value their environment and actively help shape it.
Next spring, a section of the church square will be unsealed in order to promote greening. This further promotes the environmentally friendly development of the city center. Ideas for beautifying and using the squares come from various participation formats, which are accompanied by the “Future Window” concept. So enjoy the lively atmosphere in Neuruppin, where urban development is promoted by community spirit!
