New DHL delivery center in Velten: E-mobility brings a breath of fresh air!
Something exciting is happening in Velten – Deutsche Post and DHL are laying the foundation stone for a new delivery center. The official groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which is scheduled to open in July 2026, took place on November 25th. The new premises at Heidering 13a are intended to combine the previous locations in Velten and Birkenwerder and thus not only optimize the service, but also reduce the traffic load in the region. Around 4,500 deliveries per day are the average at the moment, and the trend is steeply upward.
The new center will provide 1,200 square meters of space for parcel delivery and administrative areas. With this step, DHL not only wants to improve the working conditions for its approximately 50 employees, but also reduce its ecological footprint. The focus on e-mobility plays a central role here, because the entire vehicle fleet is to be converted to electric drives. This also includes the construction of 55 charging stations that are intended to support environmentally friendly operations, such as maz-online.de reported.
The path to e-mobility
DHL is making good progress when it comes to electrifying its fleet. By the end of 2025, 2,400 new electric vans will be added across Germany, which will increase the total number of electric vehicles in the delivery fleet to 37,000. The company now has the largest electric delivery fleet in Germany and plans to have over two thirds of its vehicles operated electrically by 2030. This is not only a measure against the ever-growing flood of packages, but also an important, active contribution to climate protection. Greenpeace is also calling for a faster switch to electromobility, as can be read in tagesschau.de.
For parcel delivery in urban areas, Ford's E-Transit is used, a vehicle that has a range of over 300 kilometers and can transport around 200 parcels. The advantage of electric vans is obvious: they save up to four tons of CO2 per year compared to conventional combustion engines. This is particularly important as environmental groups become increasingly concerned about increasing traffic volumes.
The global perspective of e-mobility
But what does it look like globally? E-mobility in Germany is stagnating while other countries are making progress. According to current statistics, there are over 55.8 million passenger cars worldwide, with more than half being sold in China. Battery production is also dominated there - a crucial element for the future of electromobility. In Norway, for example, more than 90% of new cars are fully electric or plug-in hybrids, which represents remarkable progress. These trends and developments show that the pressure to promote e-mobility is growing worldwide, as statista.com shows.
Overall, the new DHL location not only brings a breath of fresh air to parcel delivery, but also represents a milestone in the transformation towards more sustainable logistics. For Velten and the surrounding communities, this means improved infrastructure and an active contribution to climate protection. It will be interesting to see how these developments will continue to unfold.
