Greener Klever city center: Designs for the State Garden Show 2029!

In an exciting step towards the revitalization of Klever's city center, the awards ceremony for the planning competition for landscape architecture offices took place on October 28, 2025 in the foyer of the Klever town hall. The aim of this initiative is to make the city center more attractive and greener by the time of the State Garden Show in 2029. Mayor Wolfgang Gebing (CDU) emphasized the need to make the city center fit for the future and sees the upcoming renovation work as an opportunity to inspire future visitors, despite existing challenges such as vacancies and the closure of old shops. According to RP Online, customers from the Netherlands remain an important factor for economic life in Kleve.

The winning design of the competition comes from the wbp landscape architects from Bochum and includes several creative measures, including the creation of more green spaces, water areas and lighter clinker paving that heats up less. Particularly pleasing are the planned fountains around the statue at the Schwanenburg as well as the beautification of the Elsa fountain, which are intended to loosen up the cityscape and make the stay more pleasant for citizens and visitors. The exhibition of all submitted designs can be viewed in the town hall, Lohstätte 7. Today, October 31, 2025, entrances are open from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Anyone interested can also look at the creative ideas tomorrow and in the following days.

Renovations and investments

Extensive renovations are planned with a budget of 14 million euros, which are to be carried out in the run-up to the State Garden Show. These investments aim to promote shopping and spending time in the city center and to attract new groups of visitors. In this way, the city center will be upgraded not only as a shopping area, but also as an attractive leisure location. At a time when many city centers are struggling with the decline in visitor numbers, Kleve is striving to develop positively and shine with innovative approaches.

As part of the current developments in Kleve, we can also take a look at the cultural and social dimensions of society. Inspiration for this could be, among other things, the influence of the cultural theorist Mark Fisher. Fisher was known for his critical views on consumer society and the idea of alternatives to capitalism, and his ideas are reflected in discussions about the future of cities and their designs. While he is posthumously recognized as an influential thinker, the question remains to what extent such considerations are also taken into account in urban planning.

The coming months will show how Kleve will master this transformation process and whether the planned measures will bring the hoped-for success in making the city a further attraction in the Lower Rhine region. A good hand in implementation is required, and citizens can look forward to the positive changes that the city center has in store in the near future.
