Rail chaos in Brandenburg: Commuters have to expect cancellations from January!
Commuters in Oberhavel and Ostprignitz-Ruppin can expect a few uncomfortable weeks. Deutsche Bahn has announced that there will be significant restrictions on regional rail traffic. This construction work is necessary to modernize the infrastructure in the region and ensure that trains can continue to run on time and reliably in the future. That's what it reveals Moz.de that several important train connections are affected.
In particular, lines RE2, RE5, RE6, RE85, RB12, RB20, RB32, RB54 and RB55 will be affected by the construction work. The RE6 in particular, better known as the Prignitz Express, will be rerouted via Oranienburg until February 8, 2026. To ensure the safety of railway crossings, several unsecured crossings will be closed.
Adjustments to the timetable
Some trains will be canceled completely at night in the coming weeks. For example, travelers must expect that RB12 and RE85 will not run on individual days in January 2026. From January 5th, seven unsecured level crossings between Löwenberg and Grieben will also be closed. According to the railway, these measures are necessary to ensure the safety and efficiency of rail transport. The work is expected to be completed on February 9th.
The RE2 will be canceled between Hennigsdorf and Berlin-Charlottenburg on January 11th, and the RE5 is also affected: the last trains before midnight between January 8th and 11th only run to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen. To maintain traffic in the region, replacement buses will be deployed wherever necessary.
Construction projects at a glance
But that's not all: As part of the construction work, Deutsche Bahn also wants to improve the long-term infrastructure. Information about ongoing and planned construction projects is available on the BauInfoPortal from Deutsche Bahn. Here, residents in particular can view current updates on construction projects - from large to regional to European projects.
The portal not only offers details on various construction projects, but also media content such as photos and videos that document progress. There is also the option of subscribing to a free information email so that those interested can always stay informed.
An economic aspect is also of great interest: according to figures from Statista
In summary, commuters can expect a few challenging weeks. It is important to keep an eye on the timetable and, if necessary, consider alternative means of transport in order to reach your destination safely and on time.
