Future heroes wanted: young people discover careers in the blue light sector!
On January 22, 2026, around 50 young participants gathered in the Lubolz village community center to immerse themselves in the exciting world of blue light jobs. The event was a unique opportunity to find out about the daily challenges and joys of the fire brigade, rescue service, air rescue and police. After all, these jobs are not only important for our society, they often also involve a lot of responsibility and sometimes even danger.
The focus of the event was short lectures and lively conversations with experienced emergency responders who gave honest insights into their everyday working lives. The speakers included, among others, the senior emergency doctor Sandra Eberwein from the Dahme-Spreewald Clinic, Ronald Müller, who works as a senior HEMS-TC and emergency paramedic at DRF Luftrettung, and Christian Muschka from the Cottbus professional fire department. These professionals talked about their professional careers, how they got into their jobs and what the biggest challenges and positive aspects of their work are.
Insight into the training
The questions from the young listeners showed that there was great interest in the training paths and requirements for these professions. As the website Trainings.de explains, training to become a firefighter varies greatly depending on the federal state. There are various job titles, including professional firefighter, fire chief or civil servant in the middle fire service. The tasks include not only firefighting and first aid measures, but also assistance in flood and environmental disasters as well as the maintenance of technical equipment.
The training itself can last between 1 and 3 years and includes not only theoretical basics but also practical work. The prospective firefighters also have to be physically fit, which is part of the training. Because physical fitness plays a crucial role in this professional field. Lateral careers, especially for skilled trades or in the emergency services, are also possible and are supported by the various fire departments.
Diverse career paths and perspectives
The fire department offers a wide range of jobs and career opportunities - whether secondary school students, high school graduates, journeymen or academics, everyone has their chance here. In terms of salary, fire brigade employees are civil servants; In the middle fire service, it starts at 1,620 euros, while employees in the higher service can expect at least 2,758 euros, as the information center of the professional fire service reports.
Another important point that came up during the event was the required mental and physical resilience. These requirements, coupled with great technical interest and the willingness to undergo further training, are crucial for a successful career in the fire service. The opportunities for further training and advancement are also promising, from fire inspector to higher service, where leadership skills and organizational skills are required.
The second edition of this event underlines the commitment of local youth and children's fire departments to impart knowledge and enthusiasm for these socially important professions. The Lubolz fire department not only provided the premises, but also provided food for the young participants. A great sign that shows how important it is to inspire the next generation for blue light jobs.
In summary, these informative events not only provide knowledge, but also ignite the fire for professions that affect and protect us all.
