Major construction work in Potsdam: traffic is severely hindered during the summer holiday season!
The city of Potsdam is facing a large number of construction projects in the coming weeks, which will primarily be carried out during the summer holidays. These measures aim to repair and maintain the road network and should result in the least possible traffic restrictions. Particularly during the holiday periods, private motorized transport drops by around 20% at peak times and even up to 33% on certain routes, making it easier to carry out the work, reports Potsdam.de.
The administration recommends that citizens avoid peak times when traveling or alternatively use bicycles to avoid the unavoidable disruptions caused by the construction work. This means that traffic restrictions are distributed more evenly throughout the day, which is particularly advantageous during the school summer holidays.
Current and planned construction work
Various construction projects have been underway in Potsdam for some time. One of the largest construction sites since April 2019 has been the Leipzig Triangle, which will last until the end of 2025. Here, Heinrich-Mann-Allee is closed towards the city center and traffic is being rerouted via alternative routes.
Several new construction projects will be added during the summer holidays:
Important legal changes
With the change to the road traffic regulations, which was passed by the Federal Council on July 5, 2024, cities and municipalities now have more leeway for new traffic regulations that can also support environmentally friendly mobility concepts. This makes it easier to implement measures such as the 30 km/h speed limit, for example in order to increase safety at schools and playgrounds. These new regulations can also help to strengthen road safety as part of the nationwide initiative “Livable cities through appropriate speeds”, such as this Federal Environment Agency determines.
Furthermore emphasized the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport that the recent changes to the Road Traffic Act also bring climate protection and urban development into focus. Compliance with environmental protection measures is therefore integrated into traffic planning.
All of these developments show that Potsdam is well on its way to meeting the requirements of modern urban development. With all the upcoming construction sites, it is to be hoped that the restrictions for residents and drivers can be kept as low as possible.
