10 years of basic education center: Write the future together!

Potsdam, Deutschland - in Potsdam is a very special event: On July 11, the basic education center (GBZ) of the Potsdam (VHS) adult education center celebrates its 10th anniversary under the motto "We write future!". This center has now established itself as a central point of contact for adult education and offers open learning cafes in which adults can improve their skills in reading, writing, arithmetic and digital skills. According to Potsdam.de , the GBZ is one of the first of its kind in the nationwide network of 16 basic training centers in Brandenburg.

Torsten Wiegel, deputy for youth, education, culture and sport, emphasizes the importance of the GBZ. He describes it as the most important address for literacy and basic education for adults in Potsdam. "We are happy about the success of the past few years," says Wiegel, who also emphasizes the plans of the city, in 2024 to set up their own basic education program at the VHS.

The challenge of literacy

The need for such initiatives can also be seen in the numbers: According to the Leo study, around 6.2 million German-speaking adults cannot read and write sufficiently nationwide. In Potsdam these are up to 14,500 people. The location is alarming because these difficulties not only affect educational opportunities, but also the professional qualifications and social participation. Franziska Tempel, the head of the GBZ, emphasizes the importance of low -threshold access to education for social integration.

The basic training work has a long tradition at adult education centers. Since 2007, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) projects to improve the research situation on the literacy and basic education of adults. The development of new teaching concepts and curricula is also promoted. The alpha decade, which is still running until 2026, aims to support employees with literacy needs in the workplace and to increase their motivation for further qualification measures.

Successful learning cafes and volunteers support

The basic training center recorded a new high last year: the learning cafes were used around 1,400 times. These facilities not only offer the possibility of catching up for basic education, but also successes such as school -leaving qualifications or placement in training positions and new jobs. The funding mix of the European Union, the state of Brandenburg and an urban proportion of this important programs ensures.

The role of volunteer learning companions should not be underestimated. They support the work of the GBZ in a total of seven learning cafés, which are distributed over four districts. Here joint learning is promoted in a pleasant, supportive atmosphere. The offers are aimed at all German -speaking adults from the age of 16 who have difficulty reading and writing.

The ceremony for the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the GBZ will take place on July 11 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the science floor of the education forum, on channel 47. The expected guests include Dr. Jouleen Gruhn, Regina Büttner, Dr. Tim Eyßell, Torsten Wiegel and Dr. Tina Denninger. It will be a day full of inspiration and set an example for the importance of education and participation.
