Mega project RE20: Get to Berlin faster – trains again from December!
From December 2025, the new RE20 railway line will significantly accelerate the flow of traffic between Berlin and the southeast. This connection, which enables the integration of Königs Wusterhausen, Lübben and Lübbenau, is intended to significantly shorten travel times. How MOZ reports, the journey from Berlin Central Station to BER Airport will be possible in just 20 minutes. From Königs Wusterhausen to Berlin Südkreuz it only takes 30 minutes.
The RE20 will not only be available every hour, but will also replace the amplifier trips on the RE2 and RE7 lines. This line will have fixed stops at popular exit points, including Berlin Potsdamer Platz and BER Airport, and as a direct connection will no longer have to take the detour via Lichterfelde Ost. In particular, the inauguration of the historic “Dresden Railway” will be a noticeable relief for passengers after 30 years of planning. Finally, the last section of track between Südkreuz and Blankenfelde closes an important gap in the rail network.
Modernization of the rail network
The RE20 is part of the groundbreaking “i2030” project, which focuses on the modernization and expansion of the rail infrastructure in Berlin and Brandenburg. With an impressive financial volume of over 10 billion euros, the project aims to eliminate bottlenecks in local, long-distance and freight transport. How detailed on i2030.de described, the states of Berlin and Brandenburg as well as Deutsche Bahn and the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB) act together.
The project includes eight expansion corridors and a comprehensive package of measures to improve the S-Bahn network. Given the growing need for more frequent and reliable trips, long-term planning is important. Initial results are already visible, reflecting the need for a much-needed upgrade to the rail network. DB Netze AG is responsible for the planning and expansion of the infrastructure, with the pre-financing for the necessary planning being provided by the states of Berlin and Brandenburg.
A look at the travel times
The new RE20 line will significantly improve travel times for passengers. Here is an overview of the expected travel times:
- Königs Wusterhausen – Berlin Südkreuz: ca. 30 Minuten
- Königs Wusterhausen – Berlin Hauptbahnhof: ca. 40 Minuten
- Königs Wusterhausen – Flughafen BER: ca. 20 Minuten
- Königs Wusterhausen – Potsdamer Platz: ca. 34 Minuten
However, it should be noted that due to the lack of dual tracks between Lübbenau and Cottbus, the trains will initially only run to Lübbenau, although there will be a few trains that also continue to Cottbus.
Railway manager Alexander Kaczmarek has personally taken over the supervision of the project and emphasizes that most of the systems have already been completed, only the connection of the signal box at the Südkreuz is still pending. This shows that, despite all the challenges, a good hand was demonstrated in planning and implementing the project.
The vision of a modern and efficient rail network in the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region is within reach - the RE20 will be an important part of this development, which will particularly benefit both commuters and travelers.
