Art for a ride: Eberswalde children design a garbage truck!

On September 20th, the Barnim district works organized an event under the motto “Moving forward together!” a lively open day that not only brought the local community together, but also showcased numerous creative talents from the youngest to the waste management elite. The event, which took place as part of World Cleanup Day, offered a diverse range of activities from music and stage programs to free film screenings.

Particular focus was on the painting competition for children up to 10 years old, in which 21 young artists from the region took part. Christian Mehnert, managing director of Kreiswerke Barnim, was extremely positive about the children's active participation and creative works. In the future, the works will be displayed on a waste collection vehicle and thus playfully contribute to environmental education.

Creativity on the street

The vote ended on September 30th, during which the district works WhatsApp community was able to choose the winner of the competition. Karl Balzer, a 10-year-old boy from Eberswalde, whose artistic talent proved to be particularly outstanding, was very lucky. His work of art is depicted as a large-format image on one side of the waste collection vehicle that will be on the road collecting bulky waste in the Barnim district from October 27th.

But it's not just the winning photo that finds its place on the vehicle. All other participation pictures will also be immortalized on it, creating a lively and colorful collage that is intended to put a smile on the faces of the district's citizens.

Diverse program and sustainability

The open day included numerous interesting program items. Visitors were able to take a tour of Germany's first research and recycling facility and provide information on topics such as waste, energy and environmental education at information stands. A particularly popular highlight was the competition rally, where the little ones could collect stamps. Local providers provided snacks and drinks to ensure your physical well-being - a wonderful opportunity to support the region with culinary delights.

Entry was free and it was recommended to use public transport. A shuttle bus from the market square made the journey easier and ensured everything went smoothly. If you need more information, you can contact Kreiswerke Barnim, who can be reached by phone or email.

At the same time, Deutsche Umwelthilfe would like to draw attention to the growing environmental problems with its art series “Art for the Environment – KufU”. This dialogue about art and culture is considered important to further raise awareness of ecological issues. These artful initiatives help promote community commitment to a sustainable future.
