Hussite Festival in Bernau: Violence and robberies are causing excitement

The police are challenged in Bernau, because the past Hussite Festival celebrations brought some unsightly incidents. By the morning of June 15, 2025, the Barnim police inspection registered a total of three assault offenses. Five people with minor injuries had to go to the hospital. Particularly frightening: A 19-year-old man was forced in a group of perpetrators under the threat of violence to take off his fan jersey. The perpetrators disappeared undetected, and a corresponding report on predatory blackmail was refunded, as Bernau Live reported.

But that wasn't all. In the period between 13 and 15 June, two theft offenses were also reported. Unknowns stole a wallet and a handbag, which further questions the general security in the city. In a further incident, a 16-year-old was addressed on the Bernau bus from Bernau to Lobetal by a unknown person who asked him to transfer money to the transfer of money. A quick intervention by family members prevented worse. Investigations for threats and blackmail run, whereupon a phantom image of the suspect was created. The young man spoke broken German and is valued at about 20 years.

legal framework conditions

The incidents also shed a light on the legal consequences of such acts. As explained [anwalt.de] (https://www.ananwalt.de/rechtstipps/Raub-und-raeuberische-er-erpressing-im-stefinition-Unterschiede- und-Criminal-Consumer-244624.html), robbery and predatory extortion are among the most serious crimes in the German legal system. The suspicious perpetrator not only has to deal with the direct confrontation of the victim, but also with potential several years of prison. In the case of the predatory incident on the bus, the combination of coercion and threats under § 255 StGB could apply, which is punished with high punishments.

The differences between these crimes are clearly defined. While the robbery is forced to surrender his things by violence or threats, a kind of "voluntary" handover occurs under coercion in the predatory extortion. The investigation in Bernau must be taken seriously, since the legal consequences for the perpetrator can be considerable.

The current state of crime

A look at the current statistics shows that crime in Germany, as in the police crime statistics 2024 from BKA reported by a total of 1.7 % in 2024. Nevertheless, violent crime, which has increased by 1.5 % to over 217,000 cases, is a worrying trend. In view of this, these regional incidents, coupled with national statistics, drive the discussion about security measures and prevention.

The Bernau police appealed to the citizens of acting immediately in the event of suspicious observations and giving information on the clarification of the acts. Only together can we guarantee security in our community and ensure that such incidents do not become normal.
