CSD Bernau: 600 Celebrate defy right -wing extremist protest!
Bernau bei Berlin, Deutschland - On July 12, 2025, Christopher Street Day (CSD) took place in Bernau, and the mood could hardly be better. Under the motto "Queer stays here", around 600 people went through the city - a colorful spectacle that, despite the rainy weather, attracted many participants. Hundreds of other people celebrated the queer diversity in other cities in Brandenburg, such as Bad Belzig, Luckenwalde and Neuruppin. The police, which was present with strong forces, ensured that both elevators were peaceful in Bernau. There were no disturbances and the organizers were more than satisfied with the number of participants, since they originally expected 500 people. rbb24 reports that the colorful demonstration with sayings such as "CSD instead of afd" and " was underlined.
But there was also a dark side: a right -wing extremist counter -demonstration with around 40 people was registered. This group, which is classified as violent by constitutional protectionists, kept a transparent with the inscription "German Youth ahead". The police directed two counter-demonstrators for prohibited symbolism, including a belt with SS runes. The symbolism at another counter -demonstrator is also suspected of being forbidden. Despite this provocative presence, the police reported no disputes between the two groups, which could be positive about the mayor of Bernau, André Stahl. Nordkurier added that the security forces reacted preventively, since right-wing extremist calls on actions against CSDs had already been published.
a peaceful course despite challenges
at a time when queer-anti-querean crimes in Germany had an alarming increase-in 2023 alone there were 1,785 cases of attacks and threats to LSBTIQ*people, which corresponds to an increase of about 50 percent compared to the previous year-the peaceful course of the CSD events was all the more remarkable. Tagesschau reports that the most common crimes were insults, acts of violence and incitements.
