Lausitz as a pioneer: The Net Zero Valley is entering the next round!
On June 12th, over a hundred representatives from various areas, including municipalities, state politics, science and business, gathered in the Großkoschen amphitheater near Senftenberg for the Lausitzrunde's future conference. The focus was on the ambitious “Net Zero Valley Lausitz” project, which is intended to make the region a pioneer for climate-neutral industrial development. This initiative is not only a big step for Lusatia, but also an important signal for the region's European relevance, as wochenkurier.info reports.
In his opening speech, the mayor of Senftenberg, Andreas Pfeiffer, emphasized the fundamental importance of cooperation between the municipalities, the district, the state of Brandenburg and regional partners. This cooperation is seen as the key to mastering the challenges of structural change and ensuring the quality of life of the people in the region. Pfeiffer noted that it is particularly important to recognize the local population and their voluntary commitment.
A look at the goals of “Net Zero Valley”
Lusatia has set itself the goal of becoming Europe’s first “Net Zero Valley”. This ambitious project is intended to create a model region for climate-neutral industries. The EU has defined 19 criteria for this, which Lusatia is concentrating on. These include key technologies such as energy storage, hydrogen production and factories for photovoltaics and wind power. The treasurer of Cottbus, Markus Niggemann, emphasizes that the region has the best conditions for this development, as over ten billion euros have been invested in structural change for the past five years. This is underlined by rbb24.de in an interview.
An innovative training program, the Net Zero Academy, is also part of the plan to train professionals in in-demand new technologies. Meanwhile, work is underway to simplify approval processes, which should accelerate the arrival of investors and companies developing technologies for net-zero emissions.
Collaboration and first successes
Despite the challenges associated with this project, those involved rely on strong solidarity and a spirit of cooperation. The European politician Dr. Ehler described the Net Zero Valley as a pilot project that is initiated directly by the region and has the potential to serve as a model for other regions. Minister Daniel Keller from Brandenburg made it clear that Lausitz's competitiveness in the market for net zero emissions is of central importance.
The city of Senftenberg's summer reception also offered a welcome space for informal discussions in which participants could exchange their ideas and visions. The discussions ranged from accelerating planning to securing skilled workers, which promoted important exchanges to create a successful structure for the future of Lusatia.
So the path is paved and the potential is enormous. We are watching with great interest how the plans become more concrete and what initial successes will become visible in the next one or two years. A strong network of regional partners, political actors and committed citizens could actually catapult Lusatia to the forefront of climate-neutral industries in Europe.
