But what do you need to be able to donate? First of all, it is important to reach the minimum age of 18 years. The donors should also be healthy inside. In the very first donation, however, the age must not exceed 65 years. The donation is still possible until the 73rd birthday if the state of health permits. These prerequisites are checked on site during a medical preliminary examination on site, as the city of Calau reports.

important criteria and information

If you have decided to donate, you should also consider some important aspects. On the one hand, a minimum weight of 50 kg is required. Furthermore, at least 56 days since the last blood donation must have passed, and no piercings or tattoos should have been done in the past four months. On the day of the donation, it is advisable to eat and drink enough, although alcohol is to be avoided. An ID card or other ID document should be brought along to confirm identity. This information can also be found in detail on the website of the blood donation service.

The donation frequency is clearly regulated: men can donate up to six times a year, women a maximum of four times, with a minimum distance of eight weeks between two donations. The exact regulations offer a clear incentive for everyone who wants to make a contribution to the community.

types and procedures of the blood donation

But how does the blood donation actually work? The most common species are the thoroughbred donation, plasma donation, platelet donation and the self -donation. About 500 milliliters of blood are removed from the full blood donation, which is most widespread. After a short rest phase, the donors are: in the inside, usually quickly fit again. The entire procedure lasts around an hour. Plasma donations, on the other hand, require a little more time and last up to two hours because the plasma is separated from the rest of the blood.

Another important aspect is that after certain medical interventions, such as dental treatments, waiting times must be observed. Even after vaccinations, there are corresponding regulations that should pay attention to potential donors. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are excluded from the donation, and it is always important to check the health requirements.

For all those who face the challenges of a life as a blood donor, there are honors: from the third donation there are certificates, at the tenth donation vouchers, and for the loyal donors there is the badge of honor from the 25th donation and invitations to honorary events from the 50th donation.
