Journey of discovery on the Astoria: Kati Naumann reads in Calau!

In Calau, cultural life will be enriched by an exciting book presentation on Friday, February 27, 2026: Kati Naumann will present her new work “Fernwehland” in the city library. From 6 p.m., literature enthusiasts can be there when the history of the “Astoria,” once the oldest cruise ship in the world, comes to life. This symbol of the GDR era was not only a transport ship, but also a connection to the places longed for by many GDR citizens, including the sun-drenched coasts of the Black Sea.

The focus of the story is on the protagonists Henri and Simone, both of whom have a special connection to the “Astoria”. Their return to the ship marks a confrontation with their past while reflecting on the challenges and hopes in their lives. Entry to this literary journey costs 8 euros, and those interested can reserve tickets by calling 03541 / 8728947, as Calau reports.

A look into the past

Kati Naumann's book is not just a fictional story, but is based on extensive research and personal memories. The author himself describes the “Astoria” as a legend from his childhood, which was once known as “Friendship of Nations”. He was even able to visit the ship in the port of Rotterdam, but was denied access to the interior. In an interesting experience, a water taxi driver helped him to look at the ship from a distance and take photos, as Kati Naumann emphasizes.

In order to capture the atmosphere and attitude to life of the time, Naumann conducted numerous interviews with contemporary witnesses. He spoke to former passengers and crew members, all of whom had their own stories and longings associated with the ship. These stories flow into the plot of the novel, which spans two time levels and thus creates a deeper connection between the characters.

Seafaring and its stories

The themes of freedom and community that characterized life on a cruise ship can be found on every page of “Fernwehland”. For many, like the character Dora, sea travel not only meant adventure, but also privation and separation from loved ones. Dora waves to her son Erwin from a distance, while Henri tries to make his father's maritime dreams come true, under the shadow of his own family history.

The nostalgic view of the “Astoria”, which for many is still associated with the magical freedom of travel to Cuba and other places, is also enriched by the historical context of GDR seafaring. These ships were part of many people's collective memories from that time, which makes the book all the more compelling. For anyone who would like to find out more about the phenomenon of GDR seafaring, there are numerous offers, as you can read on Booklooker.

Kati Naumann's book launch promises an exciting literary journey into the past that deals with questions of identity, loss and longing. Don't miss out - an evening of stories and the magic of water awaits you!
