No rescue for Tröbitzer outdoor pool? Fundraising campaign in the test!
In Tröbitz, a small community in the Elbe-Elster district, the citizens gathered last weekend for a festival to thank the sponsors and supporters for maintaining their outdoor swimming pool. A recent online fundraising campaign raised over 40,000 euros, which is urgently needed to finance the repair of the newly installed chlorine system. This was only installed in April 2025, but there are already major concerns about the maintenance of the pool.
Mayor Holger Gantke from the CDU has been fighting for years for funding for a comprehensive renovation of the outdoor pool, which was last fundamentally renovated in 1994. But the contribution that the community would have to make for this remains a major obstacle. Tröbitz has not had a balanced budget for 30 years, which further worsens the community's financial situation. This situation is a serious problem in many municipalities in Brandenburg: more and more indoor swimming pools and outdoor pools have to close due to their dilapidated condition.
Swimming lessons in danger
The lack of bathrooms has far-reaching consequences. According to the Brandenburg Ministry of Education, almost 23 percent of fifth graders could not swim in the 2023/24 school year. In Tröbitz, around 60 children take part in swimming courses in the outdoor pool every year. Since June 2025, swimming courses have even been offered regularly again, which is a small ray of hope in the tense situation. But the challenges, especially in view of rising inflation and operating costs, cannot be ignored.
In Germany, more and more municipalities are demanding a financial boost from the federal and state governments in order to modernize swimming pools. The decisive factors are the high need for renovation, the increased energy prices and general inflation. Outbreaks of violence in leisure facilities also contribute to a significant increase in operating and security costs. Gerd Landsberg, general manager of the Association of Cities and Municipalities, makes it clear how important swimming pools are not only for swimming lessons, but also as social meeting places. Decisions about closing the pools should never be made lightly.
For Tröbitz, the situation remains tense: the community cannot raise the necessary funds, while the outdoor pool plays a central role for the local community. It remains to be hoped that the fundraising campaign and the commitment of the citizens can contribute to the long-term security of the pool.
