Wollitz celebrates his 60th birthday and moves to the sports directorate in Cottbus!
Today, July 19, 2025, Claus-Dieter Wollitz, the coach of Energie Cottbus, celebrates his 60th birthday. The former Bundesliga professional, for whom football is more than just a game, is described as a passionate “type” who puts his heart and soul into it. He is now in his third term at FC Energie and has set standards and achieved numerous successes during this time.
In October 2024, Wollitz was awarded the club's gold badge of honor. During his career he won the championship in the Regionalliga Nordost three times and led the team to the third division twice and withdrew from it just as often. He can also look back on six state cup victories. In the 2024/25 third division season, his team fought bravely until the end for promotion to the second division, although experts saw Cottbus as a clear candidate for relegation. Wollitz has a special connection to the club's fans and relies on his players' personal responsibility and commitment.
A dynamic change
But the celebrations could be accompanied by upheaval. Claus-Dieter Wollitz will quit as head coach of Energie Cottbus after the current season. From summer 2025 he will exclusively take on the role of sports director. He made this clear in order to develop the club sustainably and professionally, which was also welcomed by club president Sebastian Lemke. “I want to move into the background,” says Wollitz, summing up his reasons for the change. From the coaching bench he finds the transition to a role in which he will be responsible for the entire club as sports director - from the youth performance center to the first team.
“Energy Cottbus is close to my heart,” he confirms his connection to the city and the region. Lemke emphasizes that Wollitz has made a decisive contribution to the club's sporting success over the last three years, including winning a championship and two state cups.
Current events
Claus-Dieter Wollitz has established himself as a defining figure in the club over the years. With his striking rhetoric and emotional statements, he criticized the scheduling of a cup final in Rathenow in May 2019, which caused a stir. Despite his energetic nature on the field, he is empathetic and approachable in the dressing room.
His 60th birthday is not only a reason to celebrate, but also an important step into a new, responsible role within the club, in which the Energie Cottbus fans certainly have a lot of trust through their coach on the sidelines.
