Cottbus winter playground: Free fun between sports and games!

From December 7, 2025, space will once again be created for exercise and fun in Cottbus: the winter playground will open its doors in the city's three gyms. The venues include the UNESCO project school in Schmellwitz, the Theodor Fontane School in Sandow and the Sachsendorfer Oberschule. The Lausitzer Rundschau reports that the offer is intended for children up to 12 years old, regardless of whether they have a disability or not.

A very special highlight of this year's winter playground is the introduction of a crawling area for the very little ones. On Sundays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., families can play and exercise together until February 15, 2026. Participation is free, but the little explorers should wear indoor sneakers and be under the supervision of their parents.

A wide range of sports and hands-on activities

The initiative for the winter playground comes from several local actors, including the Cottbus City Sports Association and the Neu-Schmellwitz district management. The goal is clear: to offer children a place where they can let off steam and develop their motor skills in a playful way. Radio Cottbus informed that different sports clubs are invited to each date to present their offerings to the children - from dance and artistry to martial arts and hockey.

The next sporting highlights have already been set: On December 21, 2025, the basketball players of the “White Devils” will be active in Sandow, followed by further events in the new year, including the Cottbus ball sports club and the Tokugawa martial arts department of the PSC Cottbus 90. Overall, the children can look forward to a colorful program that regularly offers new impulses. Registration in advance is not required.

Winter playgrounds as important contact points

Winter playgrounds could be part of many families' everyday lives all year round. An interesting perspective shows that more and more parishes are creating such offers to offer families a warm space to play and relax. The idea of establishing winter playgrounds has proven successful since it was founded in the 1990s and is seen as a social and supportive measure in many places in Germany.

In most communities, these playgrounds are non-commercial and provide not only play opportunities but also a place to socialize with other parents. While many places are free, in some cases small donations of coffee, tea or cake are requested - a nice way to support the community.

In Cottbus, the winter playgrounds are now starting with exciting offers on December 7th and invite all families to spend the cold season actively and having fun. Join us and make winter a time full of joy!
