In a serious blow to the region, Glasmanufaktur Brandenburg GmbH (GMB) in Tschernitz has filed for bankruptcy. The insolvency application was submitted to the Cottbus district court and affects around 250 jobs, of which 243 employees are already on short-time work. GMB claims to be the last specialized solar glass manufacturer in Europe and has been producing solar glass for 15 years. Managing director Nico Succolowsky blames the tense economic situation in the European solar industry, particularly due to subsidized competitive products from China. Brandenburg's Economics Minister Daniel Keller expresses concern about the insolvency and sees the failed policy at EU level as the cause of the unfortunate framework conditions. Keller emphasizes that the country has tried to improve the situation since 2024, but without any significant success. The district administrator of Spree-Neiße, Harald Altekrüger, describes the bankruptcy as a “bitter blow” for a region that already has little industry.
GMB has always strived to contribute to domestic production and independence from international supply chains. Despite these efforts, the factory's sudden bankruptcy could have a lasting impact on the local economy, which is already in a strained state.
