Leibniz Institutes shine: successful evaluation and future prospects!

In the last few days, the evaluation of six Leibniz institutions in Germany was completed, which have demonstrated sustainability and innovative strength in research since July 15, 2025. The Senate of Leibniz Association has recommended continuing joint funding by the federal and state governments. The next review of the funding requirements will take place in seven years, with the evaluation processes regularly involving international experts.

The evaluated facilities are:

  • Leibniz-Institut für Raumbezogene Sozialforschung, Erkner (IRS)
  • FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz-Institut für Informationsinfrastruktur
  • Leibniz-Institut für Gemüse- und Zierpflanzenbau, Großbeeren (IGZ)
  • Leibniz-Institut für Analytische Wissenschaften – ISAS, Dortmund
  • Leibniz-Institut für Agrartechnik und Bioökonomie, Potsdam (ATB)
  • Leibniz-Institut für Präventionsforschung und Epidemiologie – BIPS, Bremen

Focus on research and development

The Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research (IRS) has made significant progress in recent years, particularly through its focus on social and spatial changes. It is praised for its positive development and increased visibility at the international level. Digitization projects to develop collections on the planning history of the GDR are also among the institution's highlights.

The FIZ Karlsruhe On the other hand, it is expanding its information services and developing new solutions for e-research, especially in the humanities and cultural studies. The institution is showing a remarkable improvement in its research performance, which is being sustainably integrated into new research areas.

Interdisciplinarity and future visions

The Leibniz Institute for Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Production (IGZ) has strategically focused on vegetable production since 2017 and plans to rename itself the “Leibniz Institute for Horticultural Sciences”. This renaming reflects the interdisciplinary approach and the planned realignments.

The Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences – ISAS has dedicated itself to the development of analytical procedures for medical research, while the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) conducts application-oriented research on a sustainable circular economy. Both facilities are positively highlighted in the evaluation.

This is particularly noteworthy Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology (BIPS), which specializes in the analysis of chronic diseases and now has impressive research data infrastructures. These developments indicate a strong and future-oriented orientation of the institutions.

In addition to these institutes evaluated, the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) recognized for its outstanding linguistic research work, which contributes through important infrastructure to the provision of language data for German linguistics worldwide. Under new management, the IDS has not only increased its digital linguistics, but is also planning further projects to research developments in computer-generated language.

These evaluations show that the Leibniz Association not only operates at a high level of research, but is also prepared to face the challenges of the future. Again Science Council In summary, each institution is externally audited every seven years to ensure scientific quality and relevance.
