Uckermark: Only a few participants attract sports games - where are the schools?
Prenzlau, Deutschland - On June 28, 2025, the 29th sports games of the Uckermark took place in Prenzlau, an event that has been considered a highlight in the sports calendar for years. Athletics, often referred to as the "supreme discipline", traditionally attracted numerous participants. But this year the participation was manageable: only nine schools and an association were represented. This represents more than half fewer participants than in previous years, since no schools from Schwedt or Angermünde participated. As the opening speaker, Robert Knappe, the chairman of the Sportjugend Uckermark, took part in front of those present and thus set the ceremonial setting for the competitions. The program included various disciplines, including relay runs, technical disciplines and stadium rounds over 800 meters. It was once again shown that the young athletes were able to demonstrate their “standing ability” under these framework conditions.

The impressive performance of the participants should be particularly emphasized. In the age group 11, Philipp Proft secured the gold medal in the ball throw with a width of 45.16 meters. Tyler Pannenberg was also successful in the age group 13: he jumped to the top with 1.48 meters in the high jump. Yehor Priadko also shone and won in the long jump of the age group 13 with 4.36 meters. The competitions were opened by the girls' relays from Gollmitz and Blau-Weiß Schwedt, who heralded the day with a lot of energy.The performance density was so exciting that some athletes were able to drive home with two or even three medals. Nevertheless, considerable achievements were shown in competitions where only two starters could compete.

Despite the slimmed down number of participants, the sports games of the Uckermark are still highly valued as an important part of regional sports life. Those responsible will keep an eye on the current situation in the district sports association and hope for a return to the usual number of participants in the coming years.
