Expert criticizes dog event: Stress for animals and children!
In Templin, after-school children recently came together at the Multicultural Center (MKC) to experience a special event: the screening of the film “Belle & Christian” was followed by a unique cuddle session with dogs from the local dog sports club. But this seemingly harmonious meeting is not without critical voices. In an email to the Uckermark Kurier, Alexander Horn, an expert dog trainer and behavior consultant, explains his concerns about this event. His criticism is not unjustified; rather, it is aimed at a conscious treatment of animals.
Horn complained that tight groups of children formed around the dogs during the event. According to his observations, based on photos, the children would touch the dogs' necks and heads, which triggers stress signals in the animals. The Malinois dog “Sally” particularly caught Horn’s attention because her ears were pulled back and her tail was tucked – a sign that should not be ignored. “An uninstructed dog during a performance is worrying,” emphasizes Horn.
Reactions and responsibilities
The club's deputy chairwoman Corinna Schulz and Hartmut Rossow, treasurer of the dog sports club, reacted with surprise to Horn's critical statements. They assure that all dog owners are very responsible and that only well-socialized dogs were selected for the event. In addition, both children and teachers were informed in advance about important behavioral instructions. “We have also set up a cordoned off area with drinking bowls for the dogs,” adds Schulz.
Another aspect of Horn's criticism is his call for a critical review of the event with statements from the club's management, the MKC and the responsible authorities. Kathleen Okrent, the project manager at MKC, points out that detailed agreements were made in advance. “We have done everything we can to make sure it is a safe environment for both the children and the dogs,” she says.
Animal protection and dog training
Horn not only expressed his concerns, but also contacted the public order office, which now wants to examine the information in detail. Ultimately, the connection between animal welfare and dog training is of great importance in order to promote a harmonious relationship between humans and animals. “A good hand at dog training means being aware of animal protection laws and integrating them into training,” explains a specialist. In Germany there are clear animal protection laws, such as the Animal Welfare Act or the Animal Welfare Dog Ordinance, which regulate the handling of dogs and are intended to prevent abuse.
Horn's critical statements remind us that we all have a responsibility for safe and respectful interaction between humans and animals. It is important to teach children how to approach and deal with dogs. In the best case, this happens through positive reinforcement and clear rules of behavior that not only protect dogs but also children.
In summary, Horn's criticism is not only a reference to the event, but also an invitation to take a more conscious look at dog training and animal protection. It is crucial for everyone involved – children, dogs and adults – to interact in a respectful and loving environment that respects the well-being of all.
