City of Prenzlau is planning a major heat transition: information event for citizens!

On Tuesday, June 17th, the city of Prenzlau invites you to an information event about municipal heat planning. The event begins at 5 p.m. in the cabaret hall of the Dominican monastery and is aimed specifically at homeowners from the districts as well as citizens of the city center who are not connected to the district heating supply. Loud Northern Courier Stadtwerke Prenzlau is intensively working on developing a transformation plan to increase the proportion of renewable energies in heat and energy supply. They are supported by two commissioned planning offices and through acquired funding.

Two public events have already taken place in recent months to inform citizens about the planned expansion of district heating supply based on geothermal energy. These measures are part of a larger framework required by law by the federal government. From January 1, 2024, all federal states in Germany must create heat plans that are intended to advance the transition to renewable energies BMWSB explained.

The path to sustainable heat supply

Heat supply in Germany accounts for over 50% of final energy consumption and is responsible for a significant portion of CO2 emissions BBSR determines. Around 80% of this heat demand is currently met by fossil fuels. In order to achieve the climate goals, the switch to renewable energies is essential: Germany is aiming for a climate-neutral heat supply by 2045. To this end, various deadlines are set within which municipalities must develop their heat plans - by June 30, 2028 at the latest for smaller cities.

Another goal of the new heat planning law is that from March 1, 2025, new heat networks will obtain at least 65% of their net heat production from renewable energies or waste heat. 30% of existing networks should be converted to renewable energy or waste heat by 2030 and 80% by 2040. These requirements are crucial to ensure social participation in heat planning and to make long-term decisions.

Importance of municipal heat planning

In Germany, 42% of municipalities are already actively working on their heat planning. An important aspect is the close cooperation between the federal, state and local governments in order to achieve effective implementation. The Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection have launched a stakeholder dialogue to support municipal heat planning. In this way, practical solutions can be developed. The active participation of citizens in heat planning could also be important in Prenzlau in order to raise awareness of climate protection and their own responsibility.

The upcoming information event in Prenzlau is therefore not only an opportunity to find out about local developments, but also a call to actively participate in this important social challenge. Because only together can the path to climate-neutral heat supply be successfully shaped.
