Lavender festival in the Uckermark: experience harvest, enjoyment and relaxation!
At the weekend the Uckermark is once again transformed into a purple sea of flowers. In Grimme, on the outskirts, the second lavender festival of this year is taking place, organized by the couple Joanna and Karol Olszewski from Stettin. For the guests, this doesn't just mean enjoying the view of the colorful fields - they can also lend a hand and harvest fresh lavender themselves. And the best thing: every helper can take home every tenth bouquet! Anyone who wants to have a bit of their own lavender magic in their garden will find what they are looking for here.
The first festival in July attracted over 2,000 visitors and the response was overwhelming. A colorful program is being offered this weekend. Visitors can look forward to treats such as lavender ice cream, lavender cake and various lavender products. This ranges from pretty pillows and scented sachets to tasty liqueur. “Lavender simply thrives here in Brandenburg,” says Olszewski, who has been growing lavender since 2017. His wife brings the necessary expertise as a horticulturist, while he previously worked as a safety inspector.
Culinary and healing diversity
But the purple plant is not just beautiful to look at. Lavender, botanically asLavandula angustifoliaknown, is particularly valued for its calming and anti-anxiety properties. These effects make it a popular ingredient in aromatherapy and even in the kitchen. Whether in desserts, teas or savory dishes – lavender is a real all-rounder! Its essential oils, which have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, are also found in many skin care products and massage oils.
If your mouth is watering, you should know that the fields in Grimme are open daily until the end of August from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. However, it is best for visitors to register their visit one day in advance by email. If you want to hope for good weather, you should check the weather forecast, because if it rains, work will be done indoors. There are also emergency contacts who can be reached until 6 p.m. to receive further information.
Take a piece of Grimme home with you
The Olszewskis have a knack for the lavender business. Your lavender plants can live up to 25 years, with the first harvest coming after 3-4 years. To keep the plants healthy, special pruning is necessary from April onwards, which supports the formation of a spherical shape. The second harvest is due again in autumn and ensures that the supply of fresh lavender extends beyond the summer months. If you want to get hands-on with harvesting fresh lavender, Grimme has the perfect opportunity!
Anyone interested in the various events related to lavender can find a comprehensive online calendar on the lavendelgrimme.de website. Be it for harvesting or buying lavender products - everyone gets their money's worth here.
In summary: The Lavender Festival in Grimme is a festival for the senses. Anyone looking for relaxation, wonderful smells and perhaps one or two culinary surprises should not miss this festival!
