Cashless on the bus: Uckermark starts contactless payment from July!
From July 1st, everyday life will be significantly easier for passengers of the Uckermärkische Verkehrsgesellschaft (UVG). Thanks to a cooperation between Sparkasse Uckermark and UVG, bus travelers will be able to pay cashless in the future. This is not only a relief for locals, but also for tourists, who no longer have to laboriously search for change.
The idea for this modernization came about in 2023 when passengers' increasing interest in contactless payment options was recognized. With the installation of a total of 160 new on-board computers in all buses in the region, the transition to cashless payment is now finally becoming a reality. Passengers can easily pay for their bus journey with a card, smartphone or smartwatch. Those responsible, the CEO of Sparkasse Uckermark and the managing director of UVG, agree: This new system is real progress for all users.
The advantages of the new system
Cashless payment is not only a step into the modern future of public transport, but also significantly increases comfort for passengers. At a time when 88 percent of passengers want contactless payment, as a study by Visa shows, it is high time for change (Riverty).
An error-free and modern payment system can sustainably improve the user experience. Public transport faces the challenge that only 15 percent of ticket sales in urban transport are digital, while sectors such as air transport have twice the digital ticket volume. It is all the more pleasing that innovative payment options are now available on the Uckermärkische buses.
The future of payment processing in public transport
The switch to cashless payments could be a groundbreaking step for the entire industry. While many cities in Germany already offer digital payment methods for administrative services, mobile payment options for public transport are only available in five percent of cities. This clearly shows that there is still a lot of room for improvement here.
According to a current analysis, there are still four key weak points in German public transport: insufficient payment options, failed payment systems at peak times, insufficient support for payment problems and the lack of payment method options. UVG's new method addresses precisely these points and could help to strengthen the trust of passengers and increase the use of local public transport.
With the Sparkasse Uckermark, the Uckermärkische Verkehrsgesellschaft has taken the first step into what will hopefully be a golden future of cashless travel, which will enable passengers to explore the beauty of the region even more relaxed.
