Art and fire protection: Photo artists enliven Bad Freienwaldes Kurtheater!

Bad Freienwalde, Deutschland - The Kurtheater in Bad Freienwalde will soon become the scene of an exciting art exhibition, which shows the potential of empty rooms. On June 13, 2025, the “Open Stage” exhibition will open there, which can be seen until July 20, 2025 on Fridays to Sundays. The exhibition is the work of the collective of the Grenzland photographers, which includes Michael Anker, Jörg Engelhardt and Mikos Meininger. Work of a total of ten artists can be seen: inside. Among them, Jörg Hannemann attracts special attention with his street shots from Cuba.

The interaction with the rooms of the Kurtheater is particularly exciting. There are no thematic guidelines here, which gives the artist: inside freedom to develop their creative vision. The exhibition will only take place on the ground floor of the building, since the upper floor is not accessible due to strict fire protection requirements. These requirements limit the number of visitors: inside to a maximum of 199 people at the same time, which also has a certain responsibility for the artists: inside, who must be trained as fire protection assistants. These precautions are necessary to meet the requirements of fire protection that apply in the Kurtheater.

The challenge with the permits

The handling of such projects does not always run smoothly. Another example from the region is the historic reception building of the Bad Emser Central Station. There, the investor Yusuf Kocyigit and his son Koray plans to convert the over 160 -year -old building into 18 residential units. Unfortunately, approvals are delayed by the progress of this project, since both monument and fire protection requirements must be observed. These hurdles were most recently discussed in the bodies of the city of Bad Ems. A game of patience that presents both investors and artists with challenges.

The upcoming exhibition in the Kurtheater in Bad Freienwalde not only brings art to an exciting place, but is also intended to raise awareness of the problem of using empty buildings. As with the reception building in Bad Ems, we see how creative approaches and strict regulations sometimes collide.
