Financing for pregnancy counseling in Neuruppin secured until the end of the year!
There is a ray of hope for pregnant women in Neuruppin: financial support for the local advice center is secured until the end of the year. Wolfgang Neises-Trebst, head of the Neuruppin Youth Work Initiative (IJN), received the good news from the state. This security comes at just the right time, because until the end of June there was uncertainty about financing after the Potsdam state parliament passed the budget for 2023. The advice in Neuruppin is a real contact point for women; Around 400 of them use the advisory service every year. Every day, two to three pregnant women confide in the counselors who discuss important topics relating to pregnancy and family.
Pregnancy advice under the IJN umbrella is not only a source of information, but also offers support in many situations. From applying for foundation funds for initial baby equipment to arranging help such as midwives or social-educational family assistance - the advice center has a lot to offer. Expectant mothers also receive excellent advice on legal questions about parental allowance or child benefit. How IJN explains, women who have decided to have an abortion can count on experienced advice. Doctors are not allowed to carry out an abortion without first getting help from a counseling center.
Funding and security concerns
Although the financial basis for 2023 is now secured, the situation in other regions of Brandenburg remains tense. While advice in Neuruppin is currently stable, other pregnancy advice centers in cities such as Strausberg, Bernau and Oranienburg are threatened with closure if funding is not secured. This information provides RBB24, which points to the warnings of the League of Independent Welfare. The legally required advisory structure stipulates that one full-time advisor should be responsible for 40,000 residents. According to the league, the demand is significantly higher than the supply - there is a lack of skilled workers and corresponding positions.
In order to ensure comprehensive quality of care in Brandenburg, the advice centers need a financial increase of 1.6 million euros in the current budget. The current amount of 5.3 million euros stands, but the challenges are growing, especially in view of increasing wages and demands. Brandenburg's Minister of Social Affairs, Britta Müller, also emphasized the need for care not only to be maintained, but even improved.
The IJN in Neuruppin has had an important place in health care since the 1990s, and its employees do valuable work to support pregnant women in these crucial phases of life. The fact that this advice center offers an indispensable foundation for many women is also reflected in the confidentiality that is guaranteed there. Anonymous advice and the opportunity to receive support in a familiar setting create a safe environment where concerns and hopes find space.
It remains questionable whether financing will continue to be secured in the coming year. So far, the country has already budgeted 5.5 million euros for 2024, which gives hope. It is important to set the right course so that the important consultations can continue to exist in the future and offer women the support they need.
