Water ban in Potsdam-Mittelmark: Dürre forces a consequence!
Potsdam-Mittelmark, Deutschland - From now on, the gardens in Potsdam-Mittelmark can be found under a new regulation. The ban on the water, which has been in force since July 5, 2025, leaves no time to linger to many garden owners. The irrigation of private green spaces is absolutely prohibited during the day, specifically between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. There are also no more exceptions for the removal of water from above -ground waters, such as rivers and lakes. The reason for these strict measures is the persistent drought and the questionably low water level in the district.
The situation is not isolated. A total of ten other Brandenburg counties have already issued similar bans. These include the districts of Spree-Neiße, Cottbus, Elbe-Elster, Oberspreewald-Lausitz, Dahme-Spreewald, Märkisch-Oderland, Barnim and Potsdam-Mittelmark itself. The cities of Brandenburg an der Havel and the Havelland have also imposed their own water withdrawal regulations since July 1. In Potsdam and Ostprignitz-Ruppin, further general orders for water withdrawal are also prepared, which shows that the drought presents many regions of Brandenburg.
The drought is noticeable
The water level in many Brandenburg waters has dropped greatly. Especially in the southern and western regions of the country, the effects of the warm and low -rainy weeks can be clearly felt. This means that numerous cities and counties use water withdrawal bans. In Brandenburg an der Havel also applies that the withdrawal of groundwater is only permitted between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.
A look at the map of the State of Brandenburg shows the terrifying picture: Almost all flowing waters lead too little water, which only underlines the need for such measures. In most cases, the removal of water with pumping devices is prohibited. The only relief: watering with watering can is still allowed in moderation. The drinking water supply remains guaranteed for the time being, but the attention of the water authorities is on strict compliance with the regulations. Violations of the regulations can result in sensitive fines of up to 50,000 euros, which once again illustrates how serious the situation is.
The regulation in Potsdam-Mittelmark has been valid until September 30, 2025. It remains to be seen whether the weather conditions will change until then and the water level can rise again to a safe level. However, the signs indicate that the continued drought becomes the new reality in many parts of Brandenburg, and every additional drop of water becomes a valuable resource.
