The newly opened bicycle parking garage in Eichwalde, which is part of a pilot project to promote bicycle traffic in the state of Brandenburg, is already facing a serious safety problem. The facility was only inaugurated by the municipality and the state a few weeks ago, but serious defects in the mounting brackets for bicycles have now been noticed. These are designed in such a way that they can be removed with simple tools, which significantly endangers the safety of the parked bicycles. MAZ Online reports at least three brackets unscrewed, although no thefts have been reported yet.
Mayor Jenoch confirmed that they had been informed about the deficiencies and that the service provider had already been informed. The defect should be remedied as quickly as possible, but despite knowledge of this security vulnerability, no concrete measures have been taken yet. The bike parking garage remains freely accessible outside, which doesn't exactly improve the tense situation.
Modern facilities and booking system
The bicycle parking garage, which has been officially used since September 2025, offers a modern infrastructure with 176 covered parking spaces and 126 additional spaces in collective locking systems. These were realized as part of a project that is funded by both the Federal Ministry of Transport, the State of Brandenburg and the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB). The secured parking spaces can be booked conveniently via the ParkYourBike app. The tariffs for use are extremely low, so parking a normal bike for 24 hours only costs 1 euro, while cargo bikes can be parked for 1.50 euros. Eichwalde.de also emphasizes that free outdoor parking options will continue to exist.
To reserve a parking space, all you have to do is download the app and register. Anyone who uses the app chooses the location and the rental period, thereby ensuring that their own bike is safe and protected. The system later calculates the costs easily.
Background to the pilot project
The background to the bicycle parking garage is that it is under the auspices of the pilot project “Modular Bicycle Parking in Brandenburg”. This not only includes the provision of parking spaces, but also comprehensive planning and funding services, up to 90 percent of which are covered by the state. VBB informed that the state provides grants to municipalities to cover all associated costs, including land acquisition and solar systems. The aim is to promote a holistic and sustainable approach to local public transport.
However, the question currently remains as to why such security deficiencies were not identified before the opening. The planning was the responsibility of the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association, which set high safety standards when awarding the parking systems. Due to the incidents, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning (MIL) has confirmed that the VBB is aware of the deficiency and that they are working on a timely solution.
