Student ticket in Dahme-Spreewald: Paid despite resistance?
There is rumblings in the Dahme-Spreewald district: the discussion about the introduction of a personal contribution for the student ticket is gaining new momentum. From the 2026/2027 school year, a monthly contribution of five euros will be charged in order to reduce the high costs of school transport. The administration hopes to achieve annual savings of around 500,000 euros, while the total costs for school transport are currently an impressive 13.4 million euros. This decision will be made in the district council on March 25, 2026, after an original proposal for a personal contribution of ten euros to five euros in 2025 was reduced to relieve the burden on families, but was rejected [moz.de](https://www.moz.de/lokales/koenigs-wusterhausen/schule-in-dahme-spreewald-das-schuelerticket-soll-wieder-kostenpflichtig- Werden-78575179.html) reported.
For the coming years, there will also be a staggered entitlement to a free student ticket, which depends on the grade level and the distance to school: Students in grades one to six do not have to pay a ticket if they travel more than two kilometers to school, while in grades 7 to 10 free transport is only guaranteed from three kilometers and in higher grades from four kilometers. However, students who are not entitled to a free ticket can apply for a VBB-2 honeycomb ticket for just five euros per month.
Personal contributions and exceptions
As part of the current discussion, there are concerns about the impact of the introduction of a personal contribution on educational accessibility. Finally, this could potentially give families a choice of schools to choose, which could have a negative impact on children's school choice. This comes against the background of an existing budget deficit in the district of around 100 million euros, which is putting additional strain on social and financial structures.
So it remains exciting to see what happens next with the plans for school transport and whether the various interests will be heard in the district council meeting.
