Painter in Barnim: Tariff increase brings 110 euros more per month!

The painters in the Barnim district can look forward to a pleasing wage increase. From now on, the hourly wage set by the collective agreement is 19.10 euros. This adjustment, which applies retroactively from April, will bring full-time employees an additional 110 euros per month. Around 400 employees from 56 painting companies and varnish shops benefit from this decision, which resulted from very tough collective bargaining, reports Barnim Current.

The current wages mark a significant step in the negotiations between the IG BAU union and the employers. On the one hand, an increase of 2.9 percent from April 2025 and the promise of a basic wage of 20 euros per hour until September 30, 2027 were agreed. On the other hand, IG BAU is still dissatisfied because the requested 8 percent wage increase has not yet been signed. The negotiations have proven to be particularly challenging. After the arbitration failed on March 7, 2025, the agreement was finally reached, as explained by IG BAU, which finds the compromise necessary but difficult. Also Craft.com reports that the employers made concessions in order to get the collective agreement off the ground.

Positive prospects for the industry

A highlight of the current wage increases is the concrete roadmap for equalizing wages between East and West Germany that has been announced. By 2027, it is expected that the wages of painters in the East will reach the level of their colleagues in the West. This not only creates equality, but also offers perspectives for the industry. In addition, painters and varnishers who do not receive a collective wage are entitled to the minimum wage of 15.55 euros, which comes into force from July.

Trainees in the painting and varnishing trade can also look forward to a pleasant surprise: their remuneration will be increased by 50 euros from August. Further adjustments are planned for the summer of next year in order to promote the next generation of the industry and show a good hand in training.

The current collective bargaining has not only influenced the salaries of painters in Barnim, but also sends a strong signal for the entire industry in the country. An important foundation for the future is being laid through fairer wages and targeted support for trainees. The negotiations may have taken a long time, but the result gives the painters an emotional sigh of relief and will put a smile on their faces when they receive their next invoices.
