Pedestrian seriously injured in Barnim: van hits her!

Tragic traffic accident in Wandlitz: On December 4, 2025, an 86-year-old pedestrian was hit by a small van while turning left. The incident occurred at 4:45 p.m. in Klosterfelde, a district of Wandlitz. The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and had to be transported to a Berlin hospital by rescue workers. The criminal investigators from the Barnim inspection have already started investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. Unfortunately, such incidents are not uncommon, as Barnim Aktuell reports.

In the same region, another alarming incident occurred in Eberswalde. A 48-year-old man was arrested by police for violence against his partner and threatening her with a knife. Fortunately, the woman was able to escape from the apartment while the officers secured two firearms, ammunition and a gun in the apartment. An investigation is also underway here, with the 68-year-old tenant of the apartment being questioned.

More traffic accidents

There was also a traffic accident not far away in Bernau. There, a 57-year-old woman was trying to reverse her VW Golf out of a parking lot when a bus driver had to brake to avoid a collision. In this incident, a 68-year-old passenger on the bus was seriously injured and also had to be taken to a Berlin hospital. Investigations by the police and a technical testing institute are already underway.

The frequency of such accidents is worrying. According to statistics, Germany had around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in 2024, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year. Despite the positive development in terms of overall accident numbers, the number of personal injury accidents remains at a worryingly high level, roughly the same as in the 1950s. Insufficient distance, inadequate speed and drunk driving remain the most common causes of such tragic events. Statista points out the ongoing trend that, in particular, the number of traffic deaths in Germany also fell significantly to 2,770 in 2024, but the reduction in accidents has slowed since the early 2010s.

These incidents highlight the need to take preventative measures to improve road safety. Vision Zero, the goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2050, not only requires a rethinking of road users, but also improvements to the infrastructure. The sad stories of injured pedestrians should wake us all up and encourage us to be more considerate in road traffic.

Finally, it is to be hoped that those affected will recover quickly and that such accidents can be avoided in the future.
