Water rescuers in action: Help and safety at Lake Senftenberg!

Things get down to business at Lake Senftenberg: The water rescuers from the DRK water rescue service are on duty every day to ensure safety and quick help on the water. A team of eight committed women and men ensure visibility and speed with their bright red vests. They have a wide range of tasks, ranging from small plaster supplies to life-saving measures. “Senftenberg 02”, the emergency boat with an impressive 100 hp, enables the rescuers to drive across the lake in just six minutes and thus be there quickly if help is needed, reports Radiolausitz.

The local group leader of the DRK water rescue service in Senftenberg, Felix Lange, emphasizes the importance of control trips and trips to the beach, during which particular attention is paid to unsupervised children. Last year, the water rescuers were deployed almost 200 times, with medical assistance having to be provided in 79 cases. The service is part of the DRK-Kreisverband Lausitz e.V., and the tasks of the water rescue service are diverse: They range from water rescue services to technical assistance such as righting sailing boats and securing events.

Expansion of tasks

A new aspect of the range of tasks since 2023 has been disaster control operations with the SEG Water Hazards. This greatly expands the range of operations of the water rescue service and takes into account the requirements of modern emergency assistance. In addition to everyday assistance, the DRK water rescue service also has lifeguarding and youth Red Cross competitions in its program and is actively involved in events in the amphitheater.

In comparison, the water rescue service in Berlin ended the 2023 season with a sharp increase in operations. The volunteers there completed over 1,273 missions during the season and helped around 2,000 people. A particular highlight was the acquisition of new technology, including an AI-controlled handheld sonar device that helps search for missing people. The water rescuers in Berlin were also active in boat accident situations.

A call to the community

The work of the water rescue service is indispensable, especially in the summer when outdoor pool visitors and leisure captains need special attention. Those interested, who may also have a good knack for volunteer service, can find out more on the websites of the respective water rescue services. Safety on the water cannot be emphasized enough - and these rescuers are essential to that. If you would like to find out more, you can find all the information on the DRK Lausitz website and at drk-berlin.de. Everyone can contribute to greater safety - it's not just about the water rescuers, but about our entire community.
