Pepper spray attack shakes up after traffic dispute in Finsterwalde!
A traffic dispute on Zwilling-Scholl-Straße in Finsterwalde ended yesterday in a shocking pepper spray incident. A 33-year-old driver had to make an emergency stop because a cyclist took the right of way. When the driver tried to confront the cyclist, he sprayed pepper spray into his face. The 22-year-old cyclist is known to the police and an investigation has already been initiated against him, reports Niederlausitz Current.
The pepper spray attack caused the driver to suffer eye irritation and had to be taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, such incidents are not isolated and represent a growing problem, not only in rural areas like Finsterwalde, but also in urban regions like Berlin.
Increase in irritant gas incidents
In the capital, police registered 589 incidents involving irritant gas from January to April 2025, an increase compared to 542 in the same period last year. The trend shows an increasing number of such attacks, and many of the perpetrators are male and adults. These incidents often resulted in breathing difficulties, skin and eye irritations among victims, such as Daily Mirror reported.
A particularly serious incident occurred in May 2024 in a shopping center in Lichtenberg, where 14 people were injured by pepper spray. Eighteen people also fell victim to a gas attack at a free concert by rapper Samra in Neukölln's Gropius Passages.
Health consequences of irritant gas
The health effects of irritant gas can vary greatly depending on sensitivity and dose. Inhalation can cause irritation of the mucous membranes, which is particularly dangerous for older people with previous lung diseases and younger people with unknown asthmatic predispositions. The police have also discovered that it is possible to purchase pepper spray that is declared as “animal repellent spray” without official approval. This could further promote the spread of such irritating gases, such as RBB24 notes.
Given this development, it is important to be vigilant and provide information about the risks of irritant gas in both rural and urban areas. The increasing number of incidents could lead to measures being taken in more regions to ensure the safety of citizens.
