Energie Cottbus: Training camp after ten years – new players in focus!
More than ten years have passed since Energie Cottbus's last training camp abroad. Now we can finally travel again! For the first time since winter 2015, when the team spent a week of training in Belek, Türkiye, the team is heading to picturesque Austria. The reason for this change of scenery is the lack of suitable test match opponents at home. Coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz sees excellent opportunities in Austria for preparation and new impulses to strengthen the team for the upcoming season sportschau.de reported.
And what are the troops up to there? On Friday there is an exciting duel against the Austrian first division team SV Oberbank Ried, followed by a game against the second division team FC HOGO Hertha Wels on Saturday. Interestingly, Wollitz is also celebrating his 60th birthday this Saturday - a birthday he would certainly have wished for other than being on the training pitch. A recovery day with theoretical units is planned for Sunday, while intensive training work follows on Monday and Tuesday. The team returns to Cottbus on Wednesday.
New face in the team
Cottbus currently has some fresh talent in the squad and the team is constantly growing. A total of eight new players traveled to Austria, while at least four more additions are planned. The new signings include some exciting names: Leon Guwara, a versatile left-back from FC Ingolstadt, and Justin Butler, an attacking player who most recently played for FC Bayern Munich and scored an impressive six goals in just seven pre-season games. In addition, Ted Tattermusch, Theo Ogbidi and Moritz Hannemann are new to the team, while talented young players such as Finn Heidrich and Lukas Michelbrink also make the leap into the professional squad. The search for additional players to stabilize the squad and a new assistant coach is already underway maz-online.de highlights.
The future of Energie Cottbus seems promising, but the departures cannot be ignored. Some players, including top performers such as Niko Bretschneider and Lucas Copado, have left the club to seek new challenges. Cottbus now has to adapt and close the gaps left by these departures.
Important decisions are pending
A central goal of the training camp will be to get to know the new players better, hold individual discussions and address the selection of the team council and captain. With Wollitz as coach, whose contract has been extended beyond the summer, those responsible have clear goals for the upcoming season. The dress rehearsal will take place on July 26th against Erzgebirge Aue, before the season starts with a home game against Saarbrücken at the beginning of August, according to information from trainingcamp.com.
The next few days in Austria could be decisive for how the cards at Energie Cottbus are reshuffled in the summer of 2025. We hope that everyone involved makes the most of their time and gets the most out of their stay.
