Westminster Eagle: On the way to the derby double in Poland and Hamburg!
An exciting competition for the role of favorite is underway: Trainer Andreas Wöhler and Marian Ziburske's Westminster Stud GmbH have two starters at the start on July 6th - including the promising Westminster Eagle. This stallion by Maxios is competing in the Polish Derby, which is sponsored by Westminster. It will be close because the competition consists of 19 starters over a distance of 2400 meters!
The Polish derby not only offers impressive prize money of 300,000 zloty (which corresponds to around 70,100 euros), but also with the opportunity for Wöhler and Ziburske to achieve a derby double. While Westminster Eagle wants to get on the track in Warsaw, Lady Charlotte will later also aim for success in Hamburg. Galloponline reports that Westminster Eagle has already won one of his races in four starts. The stallion recently performed convincingly in Hoppegarten and clearly won the race against Ruby Lips. After a solid performance in fourth place in the Dresden Youth Prize, Westminster Eagle now seems ready for the big challenge.
Behind the scenes of the racing event
The preparations are already in full swing. The starting signal for the Hamburg meeting was given on June 28, 2025, at which Wöhler's horses also have to perform well. The early morning means a lot of work for the carers: to start preparing the horses, they get up at 3:30 a.m. in order to feed the animals promptly at 4:00 a.m. The early start time not only provides financial advantages for the organizer, but also represents a challenge for participants and horses.
Among the starters at the Hamburg meeting, for example, is “Little Addition”, which is offered with side faders. Despite his last four defeats, the team has hope that he can excel again in a new environment. Racing team Wöhler also gives insights into other exciting horses such as “Hope and Believe”, who, despite an incident at the last start, is still being prepared for the Sparkasse Holstein – Hamburger Stuten Cup. The two participants “Lamington” and “Mister Phoenix” also attract attention: While Lamington is known for his photogenic nature, Mister Phoenix is described as self-confident and cheeky.
