Vandalism shock: Glass panes at bus stops in Schwedt destroyed!

Bertolt-Brecht-Platz, Schwedt, Deutschland - The Uckermark is currently confronted with a worrying increase in property damage and violent offenses. On Monday morning, June 9, the police in Schwedt were reported to a willful destruction: unknown people broke the glass pane of the passenger shelter at the bus stop at Bertolt-Brecht-Platz. The damage amounts to around 1,000 euros, such as the Uckermarkkurier .

More vandalism acts followed on Tuesday morning when a patrol car crew in Bertha-von-Suttner-Straße discovered similar damage. The criminal police are now checking whether these acts may have been committed by the same person. On the same day, June 8th, a man was observed in Angermünde who separated the exterior mirror of a parked car in Oberwall. The damage to the vehicle owner is around 600 euros. The investigation indicates a 25-year-old locals who are already known to the police.

violence and robberies

The latest incidents are not limited to property damage. There were also several physical attacks last week. On June 7, a 53-year-old man in Prenzlau, under a strong influence of alcohol with 3.31 per thousand, became violent compared to his 56-year-old wife. This was desperately looking for refuge in the basement. Mainly due to the alcoholized state, the man had to be hospitalized, while the investigation into domestic violence is ongoing.

On June 8, another incident occurred at the city festival in Prenzlau when a dispute between two men escalated and a 43-year-old damage was beaten to the ground. The racket was able to flee undetected and the criminal police started the investigation. On the same day, a 17-year-old woman was also victims of a robbery in a city park. An unknown perpetrator called for cash with a knife and subsequently captured the demands before he fled.

crisis in crime perception

These incidents throw a light on general crime development in Germany. The police crime statistics (PKS) of the Federal Criminal Police Office showed a decline in cases by 1.7 % to around 5.84 million in 2024. But street crime and offenses that affect the feeling of security are still a serious problem. It is particularly relevant that the increase in crimes - such as vandalism and assault - shows that the intrinsic feeling of security in the affected regions fluctuates sharply. According to Statista , family crimes are often less displayed than those that occur from a situation with strangers.

How the situation will develop remains to be seen. The police are required to continue to have a precise eye on the events in the Uckermark in these restless times and to ensure the security of the citizens.
