Potsdam-Mittelmark cycles for climate protection: 370,000 kilometers reached!
This year's CITY CYCLING campaign recently ended in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, and the numbers are impressive. Almost 370,000 kilometers were covered by 2,136 participants between September 7th and 27th, 2025. Compared to the previous year, this is over 20,000 kilometers more, according to the website of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district reported.
This annual campaign aims to offer citizens a platform to cycle their everyday journeys in an environmentally friendly way. The focus is clearly on the contribution to climate protection. The initiative, which was launched in 2008, has now mobilized many communities to actively cycle for a better climate. Klimabündnis highlights that local politicians and citizens are brought together to promote cycling and the benefits it brings.
Particularly active: the participants and municipalities
This year, nine municipalities took part in CITY CYCLING, including Werder (Havel), Stahnsdorf and Bad Belzig. The most active cyclists and best teams have the chance to win awards in various categories. The city of Werder (Havel) took first place in the “Best Municipality” category with an outstanding 74,489 kilometers cycled. Wiesenburg/Mark also shone with a per capita performance of 313 km per team member.
- Beste Schule: Hans-Grade-Schule, Borkheide (28.381 km)
- Beste Kita: Kita Pusteblume, Wiesenburg/Mark (4.853 km)
- Beste Familie/Gruppe: Rennstall ClaB EJFgAG (4.357 km)
- Bester Verein: Havelmacht FC Bayern 1995 e.V. (10.885 km)
The campaign has also proven to be an effective tool for promoting climate-friendly mobility, which not only encourages citizens but can also influence local politics. A study by the Federal Environment Agency found that up to 30% of car journeys in metropolitan areas could be replaced by cycling. This shows how important such initiatives are for the future of our living spaces.
Active for a better climate
“CITY CYCLING” not only promotes environmentally friendly cycling, but also offers a platform for direct communication with local politicians. Through the integrated reporting platform RADar! can make citizens aware of problems in the cycling infrastructure, which is a valuable source of information for municipalities. Potsdam's cycling representative, Melanie Gäbler, encourages citizens to take part and highlights the many advantages that cycling brings, such as less noise and exhaust fumes.
The next considerations for the campaign have already been initiated in order to reach even more people in 2025 and achieve even greater mileage. If you would like to find out more about the CITY CYCLING campaign, you can find all the information on the website NAG Brandenburg.
