Finally! Tunnel in Zeuthen and Eichwalde opened after 7 years of construction!
In Königs Wusterhausen it finally becomes more specific: After a long construction period of seven years, the passenger underlays in Zeuthen and Eichwalde were opened. This is a real ray of hope for the citizens and commuters in the region. The construction period was characterized by various difficulties, including groundwater problems, pandemic and material bottlenecks. Railway manager Alexander Kaczmarek has now publicly apologized for the delays and thus showed an open ear for the residents. The MOZ.de reports that there are also ambitious plans for the further development of the rail connections.
But what's next on the agenda? Deutsche Bahn is planning new tunnels or bridges as a replacement for the existing level crossings. However, decisions are still pending. The prospect of a possible ICE stop in Königs Wusterhausen is particularly exciting, which could be implemented in the 2030s at the earliest. As part of the modernization, the S46 trains to Königs Wusterhausen should also run every 10 minutes. That sounds promising!
modernization of the station
The train station itself is also modernized to expand the rail infrastructure for a more fluid and more comfortable rail traffic in Brandenburg. The planned measures include enlargement of entrance and trips as well as the renewal of the railway overpass via Storkower Straße. The bridge over the Notte Canal is also to be expanded. This creates enough space so that trains can drive in and out at the same time, especially towards Berlin. According to Kablow.de, the dismantling of an old signal box is also planned to make room for contemporary infrastructure.
An additional track for freight traffic on the south of the train station is also added to significantly increase the capacities. This not only benefits commuters, but also improves the connection to Berlin and Cottbus. The coming months therefore promise a lot of dynamics in the railway area.
Citizen participation is capitalized
Another important aspect is the citizen participation, which not only plays a central role in large infrastructure projects, but also in urban development. Citizens can actively participate in political will formation, put their own interests and act as a partner for administration and politics. The platform [Brandenburg Citizens' Participation (https://buergerbetiebrung-mil.brandenburg.de/) makes it clear how important timely communication and the knowledge of one's own rights are.
For the planned tunnels in Eichwalde, a citizen survey is even sought. A tunnel on the Hankelweg in Zeuthen is also discussed, whereby the decision lies with the municipal council. Citizens have the opportunity to contribute their opinions and suggestions, which shows that in this region there is a good knack for common solutions and innovative ideas.
