New local calendar 2026: Historical treasures from Eberswalde revealed!

On November 12, 2025 it was that time again: the new edition of the local picture calendar for 2026 was ceremoniously presented in the Eberswalde City Museum. The district administrator of the Barnim district,Daniel Kurth, was present at the event and praised the event as a real highlight that showcases the historical development of the region. This year's calendar edition not only shows impressive historical motifs from Eberswalde and its districts, but also, for the first time, views from the beautiful Schorfheide. “This calendar is a living culture of remembrance and an invitation to engage with our regional roots,” explained Kurth during his speech.

A central concern of the project is to make the region's shared history visible. The editor,Dietmar Ortel, suffers a good hand in this project. During the presentation, he emphasized the unifying power of historical photographs and their importance for the community. In addition to District Administrator Kurth, there were also numerous cultural representatives, such asNicole Sachse-Handke(Head of the Eberswalde Cultural Office),Martin Hoeck(Chairman of the city council) as well asBirgit Klitzke(museum director) andWilhelm Westerkamp(Mayor of Schorfheide) present. The Barnim district expressed its thanks to everyone involved in preserving and communicating regional history.

Current local history publications

The interest in local history topics is also reflected in the continuous publication of the Eberswalder yearbook, which has been published annually since 1993. In these yearbooks, readers will find a rich collection of local history knowledge and new research results from members of the local history association. The topics of the coming editions also sound exciting: In the 2024 yearbook, articles on the pot from Britz and the postal history of Joachimsthal will be published, among other things.

In addition, a new “place and field name book” has just been published, which contains 168 pages. It's latest work, written byIngrid FischerandKlaus Höppner, costs 22 euros and documents the development of place and field names over a period of 90 years. Readers can look forward to two maps with coordinates of the names and receive valuable information about the origins of the names and their historical significance. The price for the 2023 yearbook was 12 euros, while the 2024 yearbook will be available for 16 euros.

A look into the future

In a world characterized by constant change, coming to terms with one's own history and culture remains an important task. The use of digital platforms and media is becoming increasingly important, including for local publications. Anyone interested can look forward to the emergence of new formats and innovative approaches that make it possible to transport stories from the region across traditional borders.

The events and publications of recent years impressively demonstrate how complex and rich our region's cultural heritage is. History is not a fixed structure, but a living part of our identity that needs to be preserved and rediscovered. Against this background, the 2026 homeland picture calendar remains a valuable instrument of remembrance and historical awareness, and further publications will certainly meet with great interest.
