Ditch opening in Panke Park: Nature protects against climate change!

Work on opening the ditch began in Panke Park on October 29th. This is an important step towards renaturation and ecological improvement of the area. The rain drainage section on Schönfelder Weg will be exposed and designed to be close to nature. The reasons for the necessary construction work are primarily dilapidated pipes that cannot be renovated and are considered to be a hindrance to the entire ecosystem.

The old pipes will be dismantled and the new trench will be rebuilt. A slightly curved shape of the ditch is planned, which will fit harmoniously into the different heights of the terrain and thus support the natural flow of the water. Loud Barnim Current The natural bank design should help to promote various bank biotopes. The company Engron GmbH from Bad Freienwalde took over the implementation of the construction work, while the Berlin office Neumann Gusenburger Landschaftsarchitekten is responsible for the planning and accompanies and monitors the project until final completion.

Sustainability in focus

An additional pollution manager will also accompany the construction project to ensure that all environmental protection measures are adhered to. These comprehensive renaturation measures are necessary to better prepare Panke Park for the upcoming challenges of climate change. Reported in the context of this Barnim Current that preparatory work was carried out in the spring, such as tree felling and maintenance pruning.

Another point that has received particular attention in the past is the park's special fauna. For example, the sand lizard population was recorded and relocated to suitable areas so as not to endanger the habitat of the cold-blooded animals. Open bodies of water are also ecologically more valuable than piped alternatives and contribute to the rain retention capacity of the surrounding area. The secondary floodplain acts as a retention area for heavy rain and floods.

Financing and outlook

The total costs of the construction project amount to around 520,000 euros. The city of Bernau receives funds for this from KfW as part of the “National Climate Protection for Municipalities” funding program, which are used, among other things, for planting and maintenance. These investments are important not only for the ecological sustainability of the park, but also for the aesthetic enhancement of the landscape. New trees and bushes are to be planted to create an inviting place in Panke Park, which will certainly attract many visitors once completed.

These measures not only improve Panke Park, but also make an important contribution to improving the local microclimate. The popular Teufelspfuhl, which is a popular destination for many residents in summer, should also benefit from this renaturation work and become an even more attractive local recreation area in Brandenburg.
