Storm chaos in Berlin: dozens of missions, injuries and fallen trees!

Humid air and the threat of thunderstorms kept people in Brandenburg in suspense on Thursday. A striking cloud package not only brought light showers, but also heavy thunderstorms, which occurred particularly in the afternoon and evening. In the capital Berlin and the surrounding regions, the Tuesday whirlwind was even fresher, as fallen trees and squalls brought S-Bahn traffic to a temporary standstill. The Berlin fire brigade had recorded 580 missions due to the weather chaos by late evening, and the damage was also extensive, report zdfheute.

But this wasn't the only time that the Brandenburgers were lucky in misfortune. In Potsdam, a woman suffered life-threatening injuries when she was hit by a falling treetop. Another man also suffered serious injuries. In Thuringia, the fire brigade dedicated itself to numerous operations that were caused by a storm in Dingelstädt. There were also numerous emergency calls about fallen trees and blocked roads from the Altmark and Lusatia. The local emergency services are still busy with clean-up work after gusts of wind hit the country at speeds of up to 105 km/h, as reported by the renowned portal t-online.

Storms and their consequences

The thunderstorms are part of a cold front that has reached Germany and is causing unrest not only in the southeast, but also far to the north. Although the severe storms are mostly over on Thursday, the weather situation remains tense. The German Weather Service has lifted the last warnings for severe thunderstorms, but individual thunderstorms cannot be ruled out for Friday. There are also reports of strong thunderstorms that will affect parts of southeastern Bavaria, while stormy gusts will blow along the coasts and northeast. However, decreasing wind is forecast for the evening, according to DWD.

Interestingly, the highest warning level was also declared in Austria, while organizers of the popular “Brass Music Woodstock” in the Inn Valley had to clear the area to ensure the safety of the tens of thousands of visitors. They demanded that guests get to safety in their cars as the storm front had not yet weakened.

However, the weather report shows hope for the coming days. A mostly sunny and dry weekend is ahead with temperatures above 30 degrees. The good thing is that people are at least hoping that the weather will calm down, even if the memories of the recent storm are still present.
