Finsterwalde students win competition for the school of the future!

On June 20, 2025, the Finsterwalde-Nehesdorf elementary school was a shining example of creativity and innovative spirit. The school was pleased to receive an award in the Brandenburg-wide competition for International Children's Day. Under the motto “What will our school look like in the future?” Students developed a passionate project with a working group for mediation and art as well as the DRK school social work.

The creative results of the competition, including stop-motion films and interviews, impressively presented the children's visions for future school education. They ranged from modern common rooms and the idea of introducing tablets for all students to a natural schoolyard with a petting zoo and suggestions for new school subjects such as finance, cooking and social relationships. The idea of AI robots as learning companions was particularly interesting when it came to the use of technology in education.

Award ceremony in the Potsdam State Chancellery

Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke and Education Minister Steffen Freiberg were present at the festive awards ceremony in the Potsdam State Chancellery and were enthusiastic about the creative contributions of the entire event. A total of 100 students from Brandenburg had the opportunity to present their ideas about future education, which was done in various artistic forms such as songs, plays, films and interviews. From a total of four winning teams, the Finsterwalde-Nehesdorf primary school was honored, which underlined the importance of the students' opinions.

During the event, Steffen Freiberg emphasized the importance of taking children's wishes seriously in order to include their ideas in future educational policy. At the end of the day, as a thank you for the children's commitment, there was an exciting afternoon of experiences in the Babelsberg Film Park.

A look into the future of education

This initiative is just one example of the ongoing efforts in Brandenburg to improve education. The “Initiative for Future Education” aims to disseminate the knowledge gained in the different federal states while respecting the federal structures of the education system in Germany. Future locations will be based on regional conditions and should ensure the coordination of scientific activities is efficient. The Future Education Initiative brings a breath of fresh air into the education system and is intended to help revolutionize everyday school life for future generations.

The students of the Finsterwalde-Nehesdorf primary school and their colleagues have impressively shown with their creative commitment: School is not only a place of learning, but also a place of the future. And this clearly starts with the children’s ideas and opinions!
