Major fire in Hönow: Fire brigade fights against flaming hay bales!
On Saturday evening, June 28, 2025, there was a devastating fire in Hönow (Märkisch-Oderland), which caused excitement throughout the entire region. At around 8 p.m., residents noticed massive smoke developing on Mahlsdorfer Strasse and immediately alerted the Oderland fire department control center. When the emergency services arrived, a thick, black cloud of smoke was already visible, accompanied by loud banging noises that indicated the intensity of the event maz-online.de reported.
The fire department, supported by numerous emergency services and several fire engines, was faced with enormous difficulties because several bales of pressed hay were fully on fire in a garage on private property. The head of operations raised the alert level given the intense smoke and reports of explosions. Thanks to the massive extinguishing attack using heavy breathing apparatus, the fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to surrounding buildings, but the cause of the fire currently remains unclear. The police have started an investigation and are securing the site extensively. Fortunately, there have been no injuries so far.
Previous fire incidents
But that wasn't the only fire that affected the region in recent weeks. On June 22, 2025, a large-scale field fire broke out on the L33 state road in Hönow, causing thick smoke that was visible as far as the A10 motorway. Around 40,000 square meters of fields were in flames, and the flames spread quickly, helped by the persistent drought and high temperatures. This required the emergency services of the volunteer fire departments from Hoppegarten, Neuenhagen near Berlin and Altlandsberg moz.de reported.
The cause of this field fire also remains unclear. In view of the high forest fire danger level that has been declared in Brandenburg, staying in forests is currently not recommended - a step that the authorities consider necessary given the current weather conditions.
Climate change and the risk of forest fires
As the situation in Hönow shows, forest and field fires are a serious problem in Germany as a result of increasingly dry and hot weather periods. Loud Statista Germany, especially Brandenburg, regularly experiences forest fires caused by arson and negligence. In 2023, for example, over 1,200 hectares of land in Germany were destroyed by forest fires. It is a worrying development that has not only ecological but also economic consequences.
The increase in such extreme events highlights the need to take preventive measures to protect the population and nature from the devastating effects of fire. Given the current situation, the residents of Hönow hope that such fire incidents will be brought under control quickly and that the fire brigade will continue to show a good hand in its operations.
