Renovation of the Naturtherme Templin: solar park for sustainable energy!
The Naturtherme Templin parking lot is being converted to generate solar energy for sustainable operation. Construction work until December 2025.

Renovation of the Naturtherme Templin: solar park for sustainable energy!
Something is happening in Templin – and not too close! The parking lot at the Naturtherme is currently being remodeled, with numerous cars being able to park under carports with solar modules in the future. The construction work, which is being carried out by the companies Sopago, THN and Elektro Weiher, is well on schedule. The work on the parking lot is scheduled to be completed by December 20, 2025, including equipping the parking lot at the sauna and therapy area as shown Northern Courier reported.
But not only hard work and sweat are invested here, but also a good step towards the future of energy supply. A total of 2,096 solar modules will be installed, which will help cover around 37% of the thermal spa's annual electricity consumption, which corresponds to around 2.4 million kWh. This green energy comes from the planned solar power plant, which is scheduled to go into operation from January 2026, where technical work on cabling and connections will begin.
Energy efficiency in focus
Parallel to the work on the parking lot, the heating technology in the basement of the thermal baths is also being modernized. A new firing boiler and an innovative power-to-heat system are intended to ensure greater efficiency. The excess energy from the solar modules is converted into heat, which can be used to operate the thermal baths. This is a further step towards a more environmentally friendly energy supply. As the growth in renewable energy shows, such measures are more important than ever today - in 2024, renewable heat is expected to increase to 197 TWh, representing 18.1% of total final energy consumption, according to information from the Federal Ministry of Economics.
To finance these pioneering projects, 3.13 million euros are available from a special program to improve the regional economic structure. The thermal bath itself brings in a contribution of 350,000 euros. This shows that these investments are not only environmentally friendly, but also economically sensible.
- 2096 Solarmodule geplant
- 37% des Strombedarfs durch Sonnenkraftwerk
- Neue, energieeffiziente Beleuchtung für die Parkplätze
- Investitionen in Heiztechnik und Blockheizkraftwerk
The thermal spa's managing director, Markus Nengel, thanked the guests for their understanding during the construction work. Because switching to a more sustainable operating model brings not only a temporary circumstance, but also long-term benefits.
Research impulses for the energy transition
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), one of the largest solar research institutes in the world, sees such projects as essential. With a focus on sustainable, economical and socially fair energy supply, solutions are being developed here that can also be important for thermal baths in Germany. Around 1,400 employees conduct research in the areas of energy provision, distribution, storage and use in order to actively shape the energy transition Institute itself explains.
The combination of Fraunhofer research and local projects surrounding the Templin thermal baths exemplifies the direction in which energy supply in Germany can – and should – move. It remains exciting to see how implementation progresses and whether Templin can serve as a shining example in the energy transition.
