Prenzlau will receive 861,000 euros for the renovation of Steinstrasse!
There is reason to be happy in Prenzlau: On November 28, 2025, the State Secretary for Construction, Ina Bartmann, announced that the extensively renovated Steinstrasse would be open to traffic. This important residential and commercial street in Prenzlau's old town now shines in new splendor and underlines the city's commitment to sustainable development. The funding of 861,000 euros, provided by the federal-state program “Growth and Sustainable Renewal,” will be used specifically in the Bahnhofsviertel program area in the coming years to support other projects such as the renovation of the station building and Winterfeldtstrasse mil.brandenburg.de reported.
Construction work on Steinstrasse began in October 2023 and was carried out in three phases. However, there were some challenges here. Cost increases were necessary because archaeological investigations and archaeological finds, such as two Bronze Age graves and wooden bridge parts, led to delays. In addition, the parallel expansion of the geothermal district heating network extended the work significantly. The total costs for the renovation amount to around 1.6 million euros, around one million of which were financed through urban development funding.
Visible progress through funding
The city of Prenzlau has been actively fighting for funding from various European Community, federal and state programs since 1990. These efforts are bearing fruit: the city received grants from numerous initiatives to promote economic and social development. prenzlau.eu lists various programs that have been successfully implemented in the past, including “Future in the District” and “Sustainable Urban Development”.
The current funding is further evidence of Prenzlau's continuous development. Through the “Urban Renovation and Development Measure” program, numerous projects can continue to be implemented in the future that will further increase the quality of life in the city. The aim of urban development funding is to stabilize and upgrade socially disadvantaged neighborhoods in particular, while at the same time creating new, sustainable urban development structures.

The comprehensive funding programs as part of urban development funding are not only a financial blessing, but also an important basis for sustainable urban development in Germany. How bmwsb.bund.de emphasizes, an impressive 790 million euros are available for urban development funding in the 2024 federal budget. These funds are intended to help advance urban restructuring and at the same time integrate environmental and climate protection aspects.
In total, the city of Prenzlau has received around 41 million euros in funding for urban development since 1991, including around 52 million euros for around 1,600 apartments as part of the housing subsidy. These enormous investments show that Prenzlau is on the right path to creating a livable, future-proof city for all citizens.
