Miracle of nature: Falconi saves stork baby from safe death!
Lenzen, Deutschland - A touching case recently occurred in Lenzen, which makes the heart of every nature lover beat faster. On June 12, a small stork baby was given to the falconer Martina Burgold. With a weight of only 253 grams, just above the weight of a standard butter package, the small stork was dependent on the help of people. The background is regrettable: two storchen babies had fallen from the nest, one was already dead, while the other, which is now in the care of Burgold, could be saved. The reason for this "outline" by the stork parents is attributed to acute lack of food, which reflects the current situation of storks in the region. [Nordkurier] reports that the stork baby was only a few days old at the time of his find and was unable to crawl out of the nest.
In the following days, the saved stork baby developed splendidly. On June 16 it weighed almost 500 grams, and its menu is anything but boring: the delicacies include insects, earthworms as well as a wicked meat of chicks and mice, supplemented by a probiotic nutritional supplement called AC-I-Prime. It should not go unmentioned that the little animal still has an egg tooth that helped him slip. The nest temperature, which is optimal for the rearing of the chicks, is between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius. Burgold, which has developed a close bond with the Storchenbaby, will soon be handed over to the Storchenhof Loburg bird protection station, which has been active since 1979.
The way to relax the inventory
The situation of the white storks in Germany has fortunately improved in recent years, even if they still meet challenges. According to [National Geographic], the species in Germany was almost extinct, with a low in 1984, when only 3,403 nest pairs were counted. However, the inventory was able to recover through protection projects and release, initiated by Baden-Württemberg and the NABU. By 2024, the NABU reported a record number of 13,266 breeding pairs across Germany.
But despite these positive developments, there are hurdles. Storks require special habitats, including ponds, ponds and extensively managed areas. [LBV] points out that land consolidations and intensive use of land lead to a lack of food, which is problematic for the storks. During its breeding season, a stork family needs up to 4.5 kg of food every day. Electricity masts also pose a great danger: over 50% of the storks die in Bavaria due to electric shocks or collisions with lines.
what to do in emergencies?
In cases where storks are in need, finders should not hesitate to contact experts such as the federal government, NABU or nature conservation authorities. There the animals either receive the necessary care or are transferred to protected habitats. This ensures that future stork boy also have a chance of a beautiful life in nature.
The fate of the small stork baby impressively shows how important the use of committed people is to help these impressive birds and to preserve their place in our nature. We can be excited to see how the animal will develop and what paths it will take in the future.
